The Edgartown fire department knocked down a Thursday afternoon fire that seriously damaged a Katama home.
The interior of the wood frame structure at 17 Young Street, off Craft Field Way, sustained very heavy damage, fire chief Peter Shemeth said, and at one point an interior ceiling collapsed. Most of the exterior of the single story ranch style home was only slightly damaged.
“Good stop,” Chief Shemeth. He said the flames were quelled quickly, but it took about an hour to douse smoldering timbers in the walls and attic.
The fire was first spotted by a neighbor, Susan Kelly, who happened to be out exercising in the neighborhood.
“It was a good thing I decided to go out running,” Ms. Kelly said. “When I saw it the fire was just pouring out of that one window.”
A few moments later, a pilot flying over the Island confirmed the structure fire in a 911 call.
Fire departments from Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury contributed equipment and back up support under the Island’s mutual aid agreement.
According to assessors records, the home is owned by Treffle LaFleche and Joanne Brown Klein, of Newton.
