I am sitting here waiting for the rain to begin. We have had close calls of rain but it always seems to go over us or under us. I know I keep hoping but the ground is very dry and our plants need rain. On the other hand the temperatures are so nice. Not to hot and not a lot of humidity. This is the weather we can all enjoy.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Paige Herrick and Zachary Ward who celebrated their day August 5; Adeline Riley, Bryan Somas, August 10; and to Achshaph Braz and John Fetters, who celebrate their day today August 11.

I have to say that my Facebook experience was one of the best in a long time. It was smiling, happiness and crying happy tears. You see there were two weddings and they both hold special places in my heart.

First congratulations to Conor Smith who married Catherine Howareh on August 4 in Basking Ridge, N.J. Many family members traveled from all over to attend the wedding and it was beautiful as many Island friends waited for more pictures. The smiles on the faces and all the touching tributes made everyone smile. We all wish you much love and happiness for now and in the future.

There was another wedding and congratulations to Rebecca Townes Johnson as she became the bride of Jonathan Jamieson on August 5. They were married on Chapman Lane where Rebecca was born and raised. The weather was very cooperative for them and with all the pictures it looked like a very happy day for both bride and groom. We also wish them much love and happiness.

I can’t believe that next week is Illumination and then the fair and fireworks. That means college kids will be leaving to start school. Some summer guests will be leaving because their kids are starting school early and teachers preparing for their school year.

At work we lost two of our young men, Jake King and Jullyo Lima. They will be traveling to California to go to school. They are hard to say goodbye to as they were hard workers and friends. My favorite line of the summer was from one of our elder customers when she whispered to me one day, “The help is getting cuter and cuter every year.” We wish them luck and safe travels as they drive across country to go to school.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum plans to honor three recipients with a Martha's Vineyard Medal at its 95th annual meeting this year. This year’s recipients are Kate Hancock, James B. Richardson 3rd and S. Christopher Scott. The museum introduced the Martha’s Vineyard Medal in 2009, and is awarded annually to leaders in the community. The annual meeting and medal ceremony will take place on Monday, August 14 at 5 p.m. on the front lawn of the Marine Hospital, 151 Lagoon Pond Road, Vineyard Haven. A reception will follow the ceremony on site. The event is free and open to all and will happen rain or shine.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
