Layers are the only way to dress these days. Some of us got a touch of frost on Sunday night and there was a layer of ice on the birdbaths. By noon, it was warmer but once the sun started going down, it was back to jackets or sweatshirts. Since I am working outside a lot this time of year, I have a basket with all different weights of clothes. In the back of my mind, I hear my father saying, “You can always take it off but you can’t put it on if you don’t have it with you.” Once again, dad was right.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Maya Wallace who celebrated Oct. 20; Sawyer Hattingh, Oct. 24; Emily Crowell and Claire Proctor Oct. 25; and to Hyago Silva, who celebrates his day Friday, Oct. 26.

Congratulations to Cassidy Look and Tony Jackson who were united in marriage on Saturday, Oct. 20. Cassidy is the daughter of Chris and Leslie Look and Tony is the son of Aileen Jackson and the late Wayne Jackson. We wish them a lifetime of happiness.

On Monday, we started to compost the plants that were affected by the frost nip. People look around the nursery and always ask what we do with all the plants that are left over. Well, like Monday, we compost the bad annuals so they can help next year’s annuals and perennials. The perennials that are left are cut back and sent to one of the three farms we have available to winter over. They are either bumped up to bigger pots or just left alone and put under their winter blanket.

The same thing with the shrubs and smaller trees; it is a constant circle. We have houses out back that are being prepared for the summer plugs and the seeds for next year’s annuals that will grow over the winter.

I, like most, did not know all this happened and just took for granted that we bought all of the plants. We do buy some but all winter there is constant care and work for the growers, misting the babies twice a day, making sure the houses are warm, bumping the babies up to bigger pots when they are ready and seeding the next batch.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
