Sophia’s, the popular Edgartown Brazilian food buffet and convenience store, is moving from its location on Main street in Edgartown after its lease expired, business owner Ademir Silva confirmed this week.
The eatery closed on Feb. 23. A sign posted on the door reads in part: “Thank you for all the years, we share in this location and we can’t wait to see you all again in our new store!”
Mr. Silva said he expects to open in a new location on State Road in Vineyard Haven in the next couple of months, but in the meantime, disappointed customers haven’t stopped arriving at the mostly empty store.
“A lot of people come,” Mr. Silva said.
At lunchtime year round, the buffet line at Sophia’s often looped around the store as people heaped an assortment of salads, Brazilian style beans and rice, meat and sweet plantains into lunch containers, then weighed them at the register. The volume steadily rose as patrons caught up with one another in the middle of the work day.
Property owner Louis Paciello said he has other plans for the property, which also has a gas station on the site. The gas station remains open.
“Their lease was done and our company is moving in a different direction,” Mr. Paciello, owner of Depot Corner Inc., said.
He said he plans to make some repairs to the building and open up his own business there. Mr. Paciello also owns the gas station at the Airport business park.
“It’ll probably be some version of a convenience store with food,” Mr. Paciello said. He estimated that Sophia’s had leased the space for 12 years.
