Unofficially the first poet laureate of the Island was Dionis Coffin Riggs, who began hosting a poetry group at the Cleaveland House in West Tisbury in 1960.

Hundreds of kids and parents rose before dawn Sunday morning to take part in the annual Kids Derby, a featured event of the Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. At first light lines were being cast into the sound off the Oak Bluffs Steamship wharf, and soon after fish were being reeled in.
