The African American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard has announced a weekend of events to celebrate Juneteenth.

Island businesses and nonprofit organizations are joining forces this year to celebrate the newest federal holiday, Juneteenth, with a weekend filled with art, music and lectures by leading scholars of black history.

The African American Heritage Trail site at Memorial Wharf will add a small sculpture to go with the current plaque honoring Nancy Michael.

Some 250 people gathered Sunday on a glorious late-summer day to honor Ms. Isabel Powell, the matriarch of the Powell family, and the memory of Cong. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. A diverse crowd gathered to pay their respects to Ms. Powell and to take part in the making of history as the Heritage Trail dedicated its 17th site.

Dunmere by the Sea will join the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard as site number 34.

The Nameless Trail honors people who were enslaved on the Vineyard and those who escaped with help from Islanders.

The TrailsMV app now includes more than a dozen sites from the African-American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard.

Edgartown Harbor was recently named a site on the Underground Railroad as part of 12 new listings made this year.
