On August 11, Charlie Fenske of Edgartown was named one of the 16 teen finalists in Google's global science fair. On Sept. 27 he travels to Silicon Valley for the final awards ceremony.
Falmouth Academy is hosting its fall admissions open house on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. at its Highfield Drive campus. There will be student-guided tours and presentations from faculty.
Falmouth Academy is a co-ed, independent day school for students in grades seven through 12. Twelve Martha's Vineyard students won prizes at Falmouth Academy's annual science fair where more than 170 students in grades 7 to 12 presented projects to volunteer judges.
Stephen A. Duffy has been named the next head of school at Falmouth Academy by a unanimous vote of the school’s board of trustees. Currently, Mr. Duffy is upper school principal of Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset, N.J. He will assume the Falmouth Academy position on July 1, 2014.
The parents and students of the Vineyard contingent of eighth graders attending Falmouth Academy held a graduation party for themselves at the Chilmark Community Center on Friday night, June 7. As perhaps the largest class ever of students commuting to the mainland for two school years, they gained a reputation among fellow commuters for their pleasant demeanor, high spirits and generally good behavior.
On Saturday, Jan. 26, Falmouth Academy will host its annual scholarship exam. The top four scorers on the exam will receive $3,000 scholarships for their first year at Falmouth Academy.
The day will also include a student panel discussion and faculty forum. Guests will have the chance to discuss the academic, social and extracurricular life of the school with students.
The scholarship exam is optional. Falmouth Academy also has an extensive need-based financial aid program that is independent of the exam.
Four students from the Vineyard are graduating in the class of 2008 at Falmouth Academy.
They are Regina Maree Antolick, the daughter of Tom and Marie Antolick of Edgartown; Melora Marie Giles Armstead, the daughter of Kenneth Armstead and Lorna Giles of Edgartown, Christian Meigs Cabral, the son of Doug and Molly Cabral of Chilmark; and Zuzana Sottova, who is from Bardejov, Slovakia, and has lived this year with the Mark and Kim Baumhofer family in Vineyard Haven.
