Boys & Girls Tournament Raises $9,000

There were winning golfers — four, to be exact. But the real winners at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club fall golf tournament, held Sept. 8 at the Edgartown Golf Club, were the children and families of the Vineyard.

The annual golf tournament, now in its 28th year, raised just over $9,000 to support the Boys and Girls Club’s affordable youth programs, most notably the club’s after-school program, which is open to all Island youth in grades K-6 for an annual membership fee of just $20.

The tournament was held at the Edgartown Golf Club on Saturday, Sept. 12, and included 22 teams of four golfers. Club Test Drives Island Scavenger Hunt

Last Friday, children at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club received copies of the Funhunters Scavenger Hunt. “Oh, we know all about the Vineyard,” they said, beginning an animated and interesting discussion about where they might find specific items such as a “mermaid’s purse,” a plane on a grassy airstrip, and a church that has no walls. These Vineyard youngsters then launched the Funhunters Scavenger Hunt on their next scheduled outing.

The Martha’s Vineyard Boy & Girls Club received a pledge of $90,000 from a New Orleans philanthropist last Saturday night as part of a big 90th birthday celebration for Fred B. (Ted) Morgan Jr. The announcement came near the end of festivities at the private party held at the Field Club in Edgartown. Gary Solomon, who made the donation, told the crowd how much regard he had for Mr. Morgan, his family, and the youth club that serves the Island.
