The fifth annual Teddy Bear Suite, a holiday fundraiser created and sponsored by Point B Realty and hosted by the Harbor View Hotel, raised $15,000 for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club.
Almost 200 fifth grade students from across the Island gathered at the Boys and Girls Club to race handcrafted solar cars Saturday morning. The event was the conclusion of a nearly two-week long study of sustainability, renewable energy and engineering.
The lobby of Point B Realty doesn’t look like a place of serious business these days. Behind the reception desk sits Edgar, a six-foot-tall teddy bear. On the other side of the lobby, owner and principal broker of the firm, Wendy Harman, fluffs the fur of two-year-old Chappy, a teddy bear named by “fans” last year through Facebook and blog votes and posts.
There were winning golfers — four, to be exact. But the real winners at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club fall golf tournament, held Sept. 8 at the Edgartown Golf Club, were the children and families of the Vineyard.
The annual golf tournament, now in its 28th year, raised just over $9,000 to support the Boys and Girls Club’s affordable youth programs, most notably the club’s after-school program, which is open to all Island youth in grades K-6 for an annual membership fee of just $20.
The 25th annual Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club fall golf tournament raised $8,000. The tournament was held at the Edgartown Golf Club on Saturday, Sept. 12, and included 22 teams of four golfers. Participants were treated to a cookout between the morning and afternoon double shotgun starts.
Last Friday, children at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club received copies of the Funhunters Scavenger Hunt. “Oh, we know all about the Vineyard,” they said, beginning an animated and interesting discussion about where they might find specific items such as a “mermaid’s purse,” a plane on a grassy airstrip, and a church that has no walls. These Vineyard youngsters then launched the Funhunters Scavenger Hunt on their next scheduled outing.
The Martha’s Vineyard Boy & Girls Club received a pledge of $90,000 from a New Orleans philanthropist last Saturday night as part of a big 90th birthday celebration for Fred B. (Ted) Morgan Jr. The announcement came near the end of festivities at the private party held at the Field Club in Edgartown. Gary Solomon, who made the donation, told the crowd how much regard he had for Mr. Morgan, his family, and the youth club that serves the Island.
