From Teacup Request to Tempest

February is Black History Month. It was first established in 1926 by Dr. Carter Woodson, a professor at Tulane University, who “strongly believed that documenting black history and educating the public were both vitally important ingredients to the progress of race relations and the progression of the lives of black Americans.” As a class, most of us believe that Black History Month is very important and that there should be more celebration and respect paid to black Americans. Today there has been a tremendous change for all citizens of America.

Before a cheering crowd of parents, students and fans, the boys’ tennis team powered through the first two rounds of the state tournament at home this weekend with a pair of no-nonsense wins against Cohasset on Friday and Ashland yesterday.

The team is having one of its best seasons ever under head coach Ned Fennessey.

The dream season for the the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ basketball came to end earlier today, as the Vineyarders lost a hard-fought and high-scoring thriller at Wareham by a final score of 92-75 in the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Assocation tournament.

With the loss, the Vineyarders finish the season with a stellar record of 16-4; earlier this week they defeated Rockland at home in the first round of the tournament.

In a last-minute reversal of principal Stephen Nixon’s recent decision regarding appropriate graduation wear, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School district committee voted last night to allow seniors, Brazilian and otherwise, to wear personalized scarves over their graduation gowns.

The vote followed an impassioned speech from former high school student and recent Emory University graduate Alex Parker.

Ending a dream season, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ basketball team on Saturday lost 92-75 to Wareham in the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament. With the loss the Vineyarders finish the season at 16-4, one of their best records in recent memory.

Hockey alumni games take place today at 5:30 p.m. (girls) and 6:45 p.m. (boys) at the arena. The high school gym hosts the basketball alumni games at 6 p.m. (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys).

The girls move to a 3-1 record after taking down Sandwich 67-59 at home on Saturday and defeating Nauset 70-43 on Tuesday.

With the team competing in just three home meets and eleven regular-season meets overall, the accomplishments of the Vineyard cross-country squads can get a bit, well, lost in the woods.

Vineyard fall athletes made an impressive showing in the Eastern Athletic Conference All-Star selections, announced earlier this week.

Cross country: Jeremy Alley-Tarter, Cooper Chapman, Kyle Joba-Woodruff, Hannah Moore, Michael Schroeder.

Field hockey: Maggie Johnson, Meghan McHugh.

Golf: Mike deBettencourt, Chris Morris.

Football: Delmont Araujo, Tyler Araujo, Michael Montanile, Conor Smith.

Boys’ soccer: Rodrigo Honorato, John Marcal, John Oliveira, Jack Roberts.

After a brief November lull in high school athletics, basketball, hockey and swimming move to center stage on the sports scene this week. Season passes for basketball and hockey games are available through the high school athletic department for $55 for adults and $35 for seniors. Passes are good for both boys’ and girls’ games.
