The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boasts one of the most robust arts department seen outside of a college or graduate arts program. Paul Brissette, chairman of the art, design and technology department, is proud that, at this school, “arts are on an equal par to sports.”

In the sixth and final inning of the varsity softball team’s 16-1 Tuesday rout of Falmouth, one visiting Clipper stands at the plate trying to break down sophomore Vineyard pitcher Hailee McCarthy. The possibility seems unlikely — Hailee has allowed just four hits and two walks in this game, and has gone two for four in her own plate appearances — but the opposition fouls off the ball again and again, pushing the count to 3-2.

A life on Martha’s Vineyard, last year in Delhi, next year in Cairo and Stanford after that. Some people might relish the comfort and security of the bounded Island domain, but Sarah Johnson, this year’s co-valedictorian at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, wants to explore.

She shares the honor with Mary Harrington, who could not be reached for an interview.

Daffodils are blooming, Gio’s has opened for the season, spring is officially here. And high school sports remain in full swing.

Expect the fields at the regional high school to be busy this week, with 10 home games being played between now and next Thursday.

Unlike other spring sports at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, sailing can’t move indoors in inclement weather.

The team is on the water most afternoons, after catching the bus from school to Sailing Camp Park (parent organization Sail MV provides the facilities and equipment for the team). When it rains, they rig up the boats. When there’s no wind, they go out and practice nonetheless. And if there’s a late-season snow shower, well, the team’s still on the water. About the only thing that can keep them inside is lightning.

The high school teams move into the last days of regular-season play this week, so be sure to come out and support the Vineyarders on their home turf! With the exception of track and field, each team has at least one home game.

After two weeks of tryouts and preseason practices, the spring sports season is underway at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Boys’ lacrosse, track, and the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams all had their first games and matches this week (scores were unavailable at press time), with baseball, softball, girls’ lacrosse and sailing kicking off over the weekend and into April.

Though the weather has been slow to warm, spring sports are heating up at the regional high school.

The boys’ lacrosse team took a 16-3 loss to Weston, last year’s number eight MIAA seed, in their first home game of the season. Playing tough nonleague opponents, however, is a crucial part of the lacrosse program, said head coach Chris Greene.

Stormy, soggy weather forced the cancellation of several of this week’s games, but the Vineyarders made the most of their limited time on the fields and courts. Most teams have next week off for spring break, although baseball will take to the road for three games and boys’ lacrosse plays Monday and Wednesday at home.
