Greetings Island Time readers,

With the country under a state of emergency, most public events on Martha’s Vineyard have been cancelled or postponed, so we can’t bring you our usual content today. (We are, however, bringing you baby lambs to brighten your day.)

The Vineyard Gazette will be regularly updating information that may be useful to you.

Here is a link to what’s open and what’s closed. It includes information on restaurants that are open for take-out business only. Updated daily.

Here is a link to the latest news on the Island about the coronavirus. Updated on an ongoing basis.

• To stay up on Island news, be sure to sign up for The Notebook, our twice-weekly newsletter with the latest news stories.

• Breaking and ongoing news will also be posted on our Facebook page and if you need a dose of beautiful photos, visit us on Instagram.

• And if you are looking for some cooking inspiration while stuck in the house, go to Cookthevineyard.com and sign up for our weekly Cook the Vineyard newsletter.

In the absence of public events, here are some suggestions for activities:

The Vineyard Gazette Media Group is committed to providing you with information during this unprecedented time. At this time, we will suspend the regular Thursday delivery of the Island Time newsletter, but may send additional updates as events warrant.

Thank you and stay well.

Thursday, March 26, 2020

We're sending you a different kind of Island Time this week. Instead of suggesting things to do out and about on Martha's Vineyard, we're encouraging everyone to stay at home and enjoy the many Island activities you can find online. We're updating the Complete Martha's Vineyard Calendar daily with internet-based classes and entertainment, and the Vineyard Gazette also has a list, refreshed daily, of what's open and closed on the Island. And if you have any questions about what you can or cannot due under the stay-at-home restrictions, take a look at the FAQs here.

Here are a few things to consider this weekend:

Friday, March 27 | Movie time

The Martha's Vineyard Film Festival is streaming a different family-friendly movie every day for free.

You can take a yoga class using Zoom.

The Martha's Vineyard Museum has put several of its exhibitions online, including One on the Line: The Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

Saturday, March 28 | Bid on beauty

If you missed your chance to see the group art show VIP by Land and Sea at the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse, the whole exhibition is now online, complete with artist photos and an auction where you can bid on their work.

The Ritz in Oak Bluffs is streaming live music nightly with Island performers.

Sunday, March 29 | Leave the cabin

As long as you keep at least six feet from others, it's okay—even recommended, for mental health—to go out and enjoy the Vineyard's natural beauty. Keep in mind that Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown and all of the Trustees of Reservations properties are currently closed. The Sheriff's Meadow Foundation and Martha's Vineyard Land Bank Commission trails remain open, with the Land Bank requesting that all dogs be kept leashed to minimize the risk of personal contact.

Thursday, April 2, 2020

Whether you're sheltering at home on Martha's Vineyard or visiting the Island virtually, there are more things to do online popping up every day. So we're opening up Island Time to all seven days of the week, giving you something different to look forward to every day. You can still find everything that's happening in the Complete Martha's Vineyard Calendar—here's a sampling:

Thursday, April 2 | Beachy Clean

Instead of rallying crowds to clean Island beaches on Earth Day (April 22), the Vineyard Conservation Society is encouraging everyone to pick up some trash on their beach walks, trail hikes, and town strolls this month. Send VCS your photos and observations, and the society will reward you with some swag while supplies last.

Friday, April 3 | Get cooking

Award-winning Island caterer and chef Jan Buhrman is teaching a Virtual Cooking Class from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, April 4 | With both hands

Chances are, your hands have never been cleaner. Now, why not teach them to talk with sign language lessons on MVTV?

Sunday, April 5 | Museum quality

The Martha's Vineyard Museum has digitized several exhibitions, including a look at the Island in World War II, so you can experience them online.

Monday, April 6 | Ask an ecologist

Coastal ecologist Matt Pelikan answers questions about the Island's flora and fauna in a virtual Q&A hosted by the Trustees, starting at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, April 7 | A little help

Technology can be a great advantage at times like these, but it can also be a royal pain. Get help from the West Tisbury Library's IT/reference librarian Rachel Rooney, who is available by phone, text, and email weekdays from noon to 1 p.m. to assist with your tech troubles.

Wednesday, April 8 | Grab a mat

We're all called upon to be more flexible these days, and Martha's Vineyard yogis are rising to the challenge with no fewer than five virtual classes today—at noon, 4 p.m., 7 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

Thursday, April 9, 2020

If you're not an essential worker — and if you are, we thank you! — then you might be feeling a little cabin fever after all this sheltering at home. This week we've got suggestions for things you can do safely outside or under your own roof — and often on your own schedule, as well, depending on the activity. Find more listings in the Complete Martha's Vineyard Calendar. And to those who celebrate, we wish a happy Passover and a happy Easter.

Thursday, April 9 | Back to the land

The Trustees of Reservations is reopening all but one of its Martha's Vineyard reservations today, including Cape Poge (no off-roading), Long Point, Menemsha Hills, Mytoi, Norton Point (no off-roading) and Wasque.

Friday, April 10 | Poetry and Passover

April is Poetry Month and the West Tisbury Library is celebrating with a series of live, Online Poetry Drop-In classes on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center hosts a virtual Passover Community Seder at 5 p.m.

Saturday, April 11 | Lend a hand

When you grab your mask for a weekend walk, why not grab a trash bag, too, and take part in the Vineyard Conservation Society's month-long Earth Day cleanup?

Sunday, April 12 | Happy Easter!

Egg hunts are canceled and churches are empty today, but you'll find many virtual Easter services—both real-time and pre-recorded—in our calendar.

Monday, April 13 | Littlest whaler

Discover the story of Laura Jernegan, the 6-year-old girl who went on a whaling voyage with her captain father in 1868, in a virtual exhibition titled Girl on a Whaleship on the Martha's Vineyard Museum website.

Tuesday, April 14 | Film appreciation

Miss the movies? The Martha's Vineyard Film Society is now streaming features online, including the documentary Fantastic Fungi, in its on-demand virtual screening room. Some are free and others require an existing subscription or rental fee. Meanwhile, Film Society managing director Bob Dutton's popular Film Talks class has moved to YouTube.

Wednesday, April 15 | Kindness still rocks

Remember the Kindness Rocks? They're still there, on the beach between Fuller Street and Eel Pond in Edgartown, and there's never been a better time to add your hopeful words to a rock or shell. Use paint, nail polish or a Sharpie—or just draw inspiration from the many messages others have left.

Thursday, April 16, 2020

Martha's Vineyard galleries, artists and performers are meeting their audiences online these days, with live concerts, community art shows and engaging, interactive arts challenges.
