Thursday, January 3, 2019

And so the story begins: Life on an island seven miles out to sea, circa 2019. At 12:00 a.m. Monday night, nothing changed and everything changed. That is the good news. We still have this beautiful, quirky, unique place we call home (whether we live here all year or for only part of it), and it doesn't appear to be going anywhere, not anytime soon at least. But what will we do in 2019 to shore up our home, to honor its beauty, to invigorate our community?

We can take whatever route makes sense for each of us. Maybe we'll start with self-improvement, taking a class or two or joining a support group. Maybe we'll check out a volunteering opportunity. Or perhaps 2019 is the year we commit to supporting local arts or other nonprofits. Why not get started this week?

Friday, January 4 | Wicked Good

This afternoon, West Tisbury Public Library is offering the first of four free pilates classes (4 p.m.). Call ahead to pre-register. Airport Fitness has cardio and barre classes today. And Tai Chi and Tea is happening at the Oak Bluffs Library at 10:30 a.m. Or skip the workout and get some tech help at the West Tisbury library at 3:30 p.m. There's a cooking workshop and Sephardic Shabbat Dinner at the Hebrew Center at 4:30 p.m.

No work, all entertainment tonight: The Wicked Good Musical Revue returns to the MV Playhouse tonight at 7 p.m. Also at 7 p.m., Pathways begins an evening of film, screening two short films that document the extraordinary connection between award-winning author Joe Hutto and a flock of wild turkeys — and his seven-year stint with a herd of mule deer. Bohemian Rhapsody returns to the Capawock tonight at 7 p.m. and Vice screens at the Film Center at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 5 | Media Moguls

Budding film critics can gather at Pathways this morning from 10 a.m to noon for the first free film screenings of the Martha's Vineyard Kids Film Festival. Kids will be making the decisions about what will play at the 19th annual Martha's Vineyard Film Festival. Kids have it good all day today; in the afternoon, they can drop in to the West Tisbury library for a rock concert: The Pinkletinks will perform a set of classic children's songs starting at 3 p.m.

The Chilmark Library is introducting a new winter program called "Chowder and a Chat." Today's featured guest will be Keith Chatinover. The event begins at noon. At 1 p.m., we admit, we're heading to a social media seminar (trying to up our game) led by local media mavens Angela Prout and Marnely Murray. Today's workshop focuses on Instagram and mobile photography (Edgartown Public Library, 1 p.m.).

Catch Mary Poppins Returns at the Capawock at 7 p.m. and Green Book at the MV Film Center at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Sunday, January 6 | Paper Moon

We've got our eye on a journal-keeping class today with Seastone Papers. We may start a mixed-media journal for the new year, and this class will help us learn how to combine writing, collage, pasting, painting, stitching and more. The class starts at 1 p.m.

Keep the kids outdoors with Barn Buddies at the Ag Hall at 3 p.m. Or take them to see Mary Poppins Returns at the Capawock at 4 p.m.

You've got another chance to see Wicked Good Musical Review in the matinee slot today — 2 p.m. Or head over to the MV Film Center at 1 p.m. to see The Favourite or at 4 p.m. to see Shoplifters.

Thursday, January 10, 2019

Lately, the evening light show has been fantastic. There is a moment when you look out the window and notice that the sky has turned a rather eerie yellow color. But soon it softens to a ripe peachy glow. You walk out into the street, or if you can, hop in your car and zip over to East Chop or Abel's Hill or Dutcher Dock. You look up, and my, oh, my, it's all about the clouds. Without the pewter drama of stratocumulus splattering the faded-jeans blue, the firey orange would be much less interesting.

We are easily amused, we admit. But honestly we think the best part about winter on the Vineyard is having so much spectacular nature all to ourselves. This weekend, we have the chance to take two guided winter walks: one at Polly Hill Arboretum, one with VCS around the Island Grown Initiative Farm Hub.

And this evening, we can get our nature fest started with an irresistable talk by Suzan Bellincampi drawn from her new book, The Nature of Martha's Vineyard. The nature talk, Sharks, Skunks, Lovelorn Birds & Butt Breathing Frogs, begins at 4:30 p.m. at the West Tisbury Library.

Friday, January 11 | Nourished

The Kitchen Porch and The Grey Barn and Farm are teaming up to offer a farm tour and cooking class featuring cheese, vegetables and eggs today at 1 p.m.

If you know anyone who might need a hot meal, winter community suppers are back on every night of the week. Tonight is Soup Supper at Grace Episcopal Church at 5 p.m. Just a reminder: The Houses of Grace Island Winter Shelters are open as well, for those who need a warm place to stay overnight.

And for those of you itching to get out and do something lively, Pathways sponsors We Dance tonight, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes. Philly D + The Round-up and the Space Invaders are on stage at The Ritz. And if you really need to get away to another time and place, go to the movies: Mary Queen of Scots plays at the film center at 7:30 p.m.; Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse plays at Edgartown Cinema at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 12 | Art or Science

Take a printmaking workshop with Fae Kontje-Gibbs this morning at Featherstone (10 a.m.). Or take part in a family book swap at Edgartown Library (11 a.m.). Or learn about why flies (yes flies — the insect order Diptera) actually do more good than harm. Matt Pelikan's Science Series class begins at the Oak Bluffs library at 10:30 a.m.

At 12:55 p.m., Met Opera Live begins at the film center. Today's performance is Adriana Lecouvreur. At 2 p.m., the Winter Yard presents Amirah Sackett, the internationally recognized hip-hop dancer, choreographer and teacher who explores and embodies her Muslim American identity through combining hip-hop movement and Islamic themes. She will perform again at 7 p.m.

At 5 p.m., we're headed to the MV Playhouse for the opening reception of photographer Albert O. Fischer's new show. Tonight we might go glow-bowling. Movie options include The Mule, Vice, Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Mary Queen of Scots.

Sunday, January 13 | The Birds

After the VCS winter walk this morning at 10 a.m., we might get crafty with the Fiber Folks at the Ag Hall (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) or take a class on mixed-media journaling with Seastone Papers.

This afternoon, avian photographer Lanny McDowell teams up with pianist David Stanwood at the MV Film Center to combine the art forms of piano improvisation and bird photography in "Avian Improv." Come at 1 p.m. and see Lanny's new photography exhibit, too.

Wind down your Sunday at the West Tisbury Library's Second Sunday Jazz at 3:30 p.m. Today's performance is by the John Alaimo Trio: John Alaimo on piano, Michael Tinus on bass, and Tauras Biskis on drums.

Thursday, January 17, 2019

One day last year, naturalist Gus Ben David dropped by the Gazette office with an owlet in a pink plastic tub. It was a three-week-old great horned owl that had fallen out of a nest. Gus was charged with caring for it until it reached 16 weeks of age and could be released back into the wild.

We, all of us — in the newsroom and from all corners of the building — were smitten, gathering round Gus and the owlet, who was completely relaxed. Eventually the party ended; it was lunchtime and great horned owlets need to eat 12 to 15 mice a day to reach their mature height of two feet with a wingspan of four to four and a half feet. We went back to our microwaved soup and cold coffee.

Owls are generally nocturnal, but one exception is the diurnal snowy owl, a magical creature that is also the heaviest North American owl. Spotting a snowy in the wild (some years as many as two dozen may overwinter on the Island) is exciting. But we are advised to keep our distance to allow them to conserve energy for hunting.

A better way to encounter an owl is a visit to Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary this weekend. Even hearing an owl hoot on a moonlit night can give you goosebumps, and who knows what you'll encounter on the Big Moon Owl Prowl, starting at 6:30 p.m.

And while the moon will be bright on Saturday night, the big event—a lunar eclipse, in conjunction with the Blood Wolf super moon—happens Sunday night, or rather Monday morning at 12:16 a.m. If the skies are clear (a little weather is headed our way), begin viewing any time after 10 p.m. on Sunday evening to catch the changing skyscape.

Friday, January 18 | Remembering

The First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven is the place to be tonight, first for a pulled pork dinner (with all the fixin's) at 5 p.m., and later for a concert by world-renowned jazz and gospel pianist Geoffrey Hicks, in celebration of the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 7:30 p.m. The Hebrew Center, in conjunction with the Martha's Vineyard chapter of the NAACP, will also hold a special service to remember Dr. King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel at 5:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. Mariama White-Hammond, Minister for Ecological Justice at Boston Bethel AME Church.

Saturday, January 19 | On Safari

Top of our list today is the Winter Beach Safari over on Chappy. The Trustees will take us on an oversand adventure to explore the winter landscape of Norton Point, Wasque and Cape Pogue Wildlife Refuge. Safaris leave at 9:30 a.m. and noon. Call ahead for reservations. If you'd rather get your adventure from the comfort of a library chair with a cup of chowder in hand, visit the Chilmark Library today at noon for Chowder and a Chat. Today's special guests are the folks stationed at USCG Menemsha.

At 1 p.m., supporters of women's rights will gather at Five Corners for the annual Women's March. Tonight the P.A. Club holds a dinner and silent auction at 5 p.m. to benefit Second Chance Animal Rescue. Enjoy Shakespeare for the Masses tonight at the M.V. Playhouse with a lively (and much shortened) version of Richard III. And Stand Up Comedy night is back at Barn, Bowl, & Bistro tonight from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Saturday night at the movies? The Upside and Escape Room are playing at Edgartown Cinema. Tonight's feature at the Film Center is Green Book.

Sunday, January 20 | Remains of the Day

Sticking with our plan to get outside and enjoy as much Vineyard nature as we can this winter, we're going to join The Trustees' winter walk to the old brick yard in Menemsha Hills today at 1 p.m. Every year this exploration of the old Chilmark Brick and Tile Factory is one of the most popular winter walks as it provides a window into a once flourishing Island industry. Shakespeare for the Masses is on again today at 2 p.m. And tonight we're going to the Film Center to see If Beale Street Could Talk at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, January 24, 2019

Single-digit weather is nifty. Sea smoke hovers over breaking surf. Icicles the size of dinosaur teeth dangle from docks. But here's the thing: It's hard to do just about anything when the temperature is as low as five degrees and the windspeed as high as 30 mph as it was this past Monday. Even a glassy frozen pond couldn't get us outside. So we're okay with a warm-up. It might rain a little this weekend, but you can bet we'll be out anyway.

Friday, January 25 | Movie night

If you're interested in the state of our oceans, you'll want to check out Pathways' special film collection tonight. Beginning at 7 p.m, they'll show a selection of short films focusing on successful initiatives to save our oceans and the organizations behind them.

Also, the Oscar nominations have been announced; time to catch some of the movies you haven't seen. Regina King has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, which plays at the MV Film Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. And Roma, nominated for Best Picture and other Oscars, is playing at the Edgartown Cinema tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 26 | In Bloom

We love flowers, and this morning at 11 a.m. we can be surrounded by beauty at Morrice Florist. In the Dutch Flower Class, we'll get to make an arrangement from Dutch flowers and have a portrait taken of it as well.

This afternoon at 4 p.m., the MV Film Center hosts the Peter Luce Play Readers for Glass Mendacity, an entertaining mashup of three Tennessee Williams plays—The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

And tonight's movies include Can You Ever Forgive Me? at the Edgartown Cinema at 6:45. The film captured three Oscar nominations, including a Best Actress nomination for Melissa McCarthy.

If you're not up for a flick but want to support a good cause, head to the Loft for the PTO Silent Auction and fundraiser for Oak Bluffs School.

Sunday, January 27 | Renew and Sustain

Winter Sundays are a good time to explore ways to make living on the Island more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. For instance, the first Climate Cafe happens today at 2 p.m. at Mocha Motts in Vineyard Haven. High school students and Felix Neck folks will lead a caffeine-fueled discussion of renewable energy. And at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, anyone interested in composting will want to attend West Tisbury Library's workshop, Composting: What to Do with Food Waste During Winter, taught by experts from Morning Glory Farm and Island Grown Initiative.

Film goers have lots of options today, from Opera Club at the Edgartown Libary (Verdi's Don Carlo begins at 1 p.m.) to Mary Poppins Returns, Roma, A Dog's Way Home, and Can You Ever Forgive Me at the Edgartown Cinema, and Oscar-nominated Green Book at the film center at 4 p.m.

Thursday, January 31, 2019

Around here we refer to our ferries as boats. As in, "I'm running late to get to the boat." "I missed the boat." And the always popular "The boats are not running." It doesn't matter if it's the M/V Woods Hole, the M/V Island Home, the M/V Martha's Vineyard or even the M/V Katama or the M/V Sankaty, which are freight boats. The Steamship calls them all vessels. We call them boats.

With one exception: The Chappy ferry, which we call by its vessel's name, the On-Time (as in On-Time III above) or just "the ferry." Calling the Chappy ferry a boat would be a stretch of the definition of a boat, anyway, since technically it is a motorized barge. However, because the Chappy ferry is so reliable, it's not often that we'd have to say that "the [Chappy] boat is running late" or not running at all. Whew.

Now that we've got that worked out, we want you to know that we hope you get on a boat (if you're in what we call America) and come over to visit us this weekend. We realize there's a televised sporting event on Sunday night. Maybe you're hoping to be in your favorite, most comfortable armchair for that. We, er, promise we'll get you home in time (on time?). That is, if the boats are running. Hey, why not live a little? We've got some great live music, films, art, food, and sports events this weekend. And yes, even a Super Bowl party or two. If you miss your boat.

Friday, February 1 | Tune in

Tonight the West Tisbury School Committee is hosting its second annual Zero Waste Night, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bring a place setting and a mug and enjoy a delicious supper, Chilmark coffee, a collection of inspiring short films, and fun activities for all ages. In Vineyard Haven, Indie-rock Christian band Carrollton makes a stop on their New England tour at the Katharine Cornell theater at 7 p.m.

At the movies tonight, you've got a choice between two Oscar nominated films: Roma (nominated for Best Picture) at the Edgartown Cinema at 6:45 p.m. and Cold War (nominated for Best Director) at the MV Film Center at 7:30 p.m. Later on, live music at the Ritz includes Philly D + The Roundup at 7:30 p.m. and Sabrina at 10 p.m.

The Oak Bluffs library offers a kick-off to Black History Month with a musical brunch and talk sponsored by the NAACP, ASALH, and the League of Women Voters. Following a performance of Negro spirituals, there will be a brief history of each organization and a talk by Dr. Walter Collier on Why Racism Persists: An Uncomfortable Truth.

Looking for good food and a party tonight? The Barn, Bowl & Bistro is having a Brazilian Night with authentic Brazilian food and Caipirinhas, music by DJ AP and The Brazilian Connection, and 50 percent off bowling and shoe rental.

You can catch a matinee at the film center at 1 p.m. Another Oscar-nominated film, Green Book, is showing. Cold War shows at 4 p.m. There is no evening showing at the film center due to the Super Bowl. Over at the Edgartown Cinema, you can see A Dog's Way Home, Mary Poppins Returns or Roma this afternoon. And if you don't care about the pre-game show, you could also see A Star is Born at 3:30 p.m. (or 6:30 p.m if you're not a football fan).

Super Bowl parties are happening at Sharky's, the Ocean View, and the Ritz.

Thursday, February 7, 2019

Things are looking up. We have 10 hours of daylight. We hear a lot of garden-planning and seed-swapping talk on the street. (Yes, we hear other talk on the street, but we steer away from controversy.) We took advantage of the little warm-up this week to walk around the backyard, imagining where the new garden beds might go this spring. We are hopeful.

In defiance of hibernation, we are signing up for cooking classes, learning new crafts at Featherstone, watching Oscar-nominated films (in the theater—here come the Shorts!), and shopping. Yes, shopping. Just because the holiday season has passed doesn't mean we shouldn't show some love for local businesses who stay open all winter: how about an indoor sidewalk sale this weekend?

Of course, we're always up for outdoor winter activities, too. Enjoy a winter walk at Polly Hill or a walk along Chilmark's North Shore with VCS this weekend. And think spring.

Friday, February 8 | Lights, Camera, Action

Theater, film, music — you've got your choice of performances tonight. We're excited about the Oscar-nominated short films that will be showing all weekend at the film center, and tonight the first five, the Live Action Shorts, will show at 7:30 p.m. Pathways is presenting another series of fascinating short films that look at initiatives to save our oceans. The films begin showing at 7:00 p.m. Over at Edgartown Cinema, The Lego Movie 2 hits the big screen (serious fun).

The talented crew of the Wicked Good Musical Revue return to the MV Playhouse tonight at 7:00 p.m. Or if you prefer to check out the future stars of the stage, watch Tisbury School's performance of Alice in Wonderland Jr. at 6 p.m.

Saturday, February 9 | For Sale or Swap

Join the Trustees on Cape Poge today for a beach clean-up and hike, followed by a hangout at the lighthouse. Love the Rock begins at 11 a.m., but you'll need to register ahead.

In addition to the Indoor Sidewalk Sale at Edgartown School (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), there is also a big clothing and fine art sale at The Annex today in Vineyard Haven (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Kids can make Valentines at the Chilmark Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. or participate in Kids' Yoga and Valentines Craft Night at Eclipse Studio tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Oscar Shorts continue today at the Film Center with the Animation nominees at 1 p.m. and the Documentary films at 7:30 p.m. A documentary about seed savers, seed activists, and the importance of saving heirloom seeds shows at the West Tisbury library at 12:30 p.m. right before the seed swap at 2 p.m.

Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish headline the Blues Blizzard at the Chilmark Community Center tonight from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Thursday, February 14, 2019

There's a breed of Vineyarder who prefers the winter over the summer. In fact, this species is quite populous. Sometimes it's hard to identify one, as he or she may be covered in neoprene head to toe or swathed in fleece and wool. But they're out there, enjoying the ocean and beach which, ironically, people pay big bucks to flock to for a mere six or eight weeks of the year, forgetting that the killer views and higher endorphin levels are available here the other 44 weeks of the year, without the crowds. Play your cards right, and you (and your dog) can have Lucy Vincent beach to yourself at sunset. Just sayin’.

We realize that while surfing and beachcombing may sound appealing to some, the rest of you have only one thing on your mind today: chocolate. Okay, and maybe flowers.

The talented floral crews at Morrice Florist and Donaroma’s can take care of the flowers (call quickly). Enchanted Chocolates in Oak Bluffs is ready to go with all kinds of chocolate gifts, and our beloved Chilmark Chocolates, open today at 10:30 a.m. for its last Valentine’s Day (the owners are retiring the shop at the end of the year), will have a line out the door we’re sure.

There are also Valentine’s Day pop-up dinners tonight at The Plane View and The Ritz, and guest Chef Austin Racine is cooking a special Valentine’s dinner at Park Corner.

Best of all, you can visit The Grey Barn and Farm farmstand from 3 p.m to 5 p.m. today to take your photo with a baby lamb.

Friday, February 15 | Equal Time

Maybe you're single and frankly glad that Valentine's Day is over. This year, there's a special event for you: a post-Valentine's Day singles potluck at the P.A. Club (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.). If you're looking for something a little more low-key, why not try Knit Night at Haven from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The high school's exciting musical, an adaptation of Shakespeare's As You Like It, happens tonight at the Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. There are performances at 7 p.m. tomorrow night and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The new film about Laurel & Hardy, Stan and Ollie, plays at the MV Film Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. Over at Edgartown Cinema, Glass and Alita: Battle Angel are both showing at 6:45 p.m.

Saturday, February 16 | Library Love

It's amazing how many stimulating winter activities our Island Libraries host for us. This weekend we're excited about Roxane Kapitan's Regenerative Backyard Gardening Workshop at the West Tisbury Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Learn chess at the Oak Bluffs Library from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Pick up some books at the Vineyard Haven library's mini booksale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. And at 2 p.m., enjoy a lively concert of Celtic favorites from the duo of fiddler Nikki Engstrom and guitarist/vocalist Sean Brennan at the Edgartown Library. Aquinnah Library has Kids Crafts at 11 a.m.

Die-hard runners will lace up their shoes this morning for the annual Martha's Vineyard 20-Miler and Amity Island Relay, starting at 11 a.m. at the Steamship Authority Terminal in Vineyard Haven.

Three fun choices for this evening: a Chilmark Potluck Jam (6:30 p.m.), Jenny's Drama Salon at the MV Playhouse (7 p.m.), and of course, As You Like It (7 p.m.). The Film Center is running the Oscar Shorts again this weekend. Tonight you can see the documentaries at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, February 17 | Hands On

This morning you can take a printmaking workshop with Fae Kontje-Gibbs at Featherstone (10 a.m.) or join Seastone Papers' workshops and learn to put together a big-button monotype book today at 12:30 p.m. The bread-making workshop continues today at the Vineyard Haven Public Library at 12:30 p.m. with a lesson on sourdough proofing and mixing.

The legendary Paul Jackson (winner of too many Fair ribbons to count) will talk about soil and answer questions today at the West Tisbury library at 3:30 p.m. This event, sponsored by the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury's Green Team, is sure to be packed.

An encore of the fabulous Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration is scheduled to show at the MV Film Center tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, February 21, 2019

We had a wee bit of snow this weekend. A covering, softened just enough by sleet and rising temps to capture the footprints of rabbits and raccoons and dogs and deer before hardening back to a crusty record of one winter day on the Vineyard. We had sun, too. We walked through the woods in the snow and on the beach in the sun. Both were perfect and just enough. Nothing more needed for a good day.

This weekend we are going to eat. Seriously. The Meat Ball is Saturday Night. There are three cooking workshops going on. The Martha's Vineyard Vegan Society is giving away fresh fruits and vegetables on Friday. Community Suppers continue, and don't forget that thanks to Island Grown Initiative's Community Lunch Program, free lunch is available during school vacation week, starting Monday.

Friday, February 22 | Movie Night

For families who aren't getting off the Rock for school vacation week, start your staycation with a great movie tonight — How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World plays at the Edgartown Cinema at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Oscar fans will also want to head out tonight: BlackkKlansman is making a one-night-only appearance at the film center at 7:30 p.m.

If you'd rather get out of your seats and move around, head to the Yard at 7 p.m. for an energetic performance by Brooklyn band Red Baarat. Their high-energy fusion of jazz, hip-hop, rock, and funk makes powerful music for dancing — which you are welcome to do.

Saturday, February 23 | Now We're Cooking

If you're one of those Islanders with a lot of venison in the freezer, you don't want to miss the opportunity to take a class from hunter and cook Brian Athearn at the Ag Hall today. The Cooking with Venison workshop runs from noon to 2 p.m. There's also a cooking workshop for kids at the Ag Hall starting at 10 a.m. And Everett Whiting is holding a cooking class on making pasta and traditional meat sauce at Slough Farm at 2 p.m. All of these classes are part of the celebration of Island-raised meat which culminates in tonight's Meat Ball at the Ag Hall, starting at 5:30 p.m. This year's Meat Ball features all-you-can-eat tacos.

If a cooking class isn't your thing, this afternoon you could also go to an astrology workshop, a social media workshop, or the elder tech fair.

The film center is showing the Oscar-nominated documentary shorts tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Glass is on the big screen at Edgartown Cinema at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday, February 24 | History and Heritage

In honor of Black History Month, Dr. Walter Collier will speak about his book, Why Racism Persists: An Uncomfortable Truth, after the Sunday service at the Federated Church in Edgartown. The presentation begins at 11:30 a.m. and will include a question and answer session.

At the Vineyard Haven library, Elaine Cawley Weintraub will give a talk about the building of the African-American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard at 2 p.m.

Tonight's the night — Oscar night, that is. And the MV Film Center will be hosting its annual viewing party for the 91rst Academy Awards. The event includes light appetizers, desserts, and beverages and begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Red Carpet arrivals. Guests will have an opportunity to have their picture taken with a real Oscar. When the ceremony begins at 8 p.m., the film center will give out prizes that include movie passes and movie posters.

And while you’re watching the Oscars, keep your eyes peeled for Vineyard native Holly Bario (Giving a Green Light to Green Book), president of production for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners, whose feature film The Green Book is a Best Picture nominee.

Thursday, February 28, 2019

The windows and doors rattled and shook in the old house Monday night, keeping the occupants of the former summer cottage on the north shore awake and on guard. Outside, the roar of the wind was deafening, a small dog stumbled to get her footing, and the cold seeped through the lining of a parka as if it were tissue paper. Gusts topped 40 mph. Ferries stayed at the dock.

The next morning, there was still a bit of knocking about, but the sun shone brilliantly. There were snowdrops in West Tisbury, newborn lambs all over the Island, tomato seedlings in the greenhouse at Morning Glory Farm. That night the twilight hung in a violet blanket over the horizon far past 5 o’clock.

On cue, March roars in like a lion — with the lamb skipping not far behind.

Ten Ideas for the Weekend

If you are one of the brave souls tethered to this Island for the duration of winter (or for the duration of school vacation week), treat yourself this weekend. Here are ten ideas.

1. Maybe you're in the mood for a night of great music and dancing, raffles and prizes at the P.A. Club. It's the Gig for the Gigs, the Rowing Club of Sail M.V.'s annual fundraiser, beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

2. Why not visit Bunch of Grapes and buy a new book — a best-selling thriller, a cookbook, a memoir, an Island history?

3. Speaking of books, the libraries are rocking this week with events for kids, but adult art lovers and Island lovers will want to (4.) visit the West Tisbury library's opening reception for photographer Albert O. Fischer's work on Saturday afternoon between 3:30 and 5 p.m. (Yes, here at the Gazette we depend on Albert to capture up-Island beauty for us; see above.)

5. Brace yourself for some vocal fireworks and settle into your comfortable seat at the MV Film Center for opera (La Fille du Regiment), live onscreen from the Met, 12:55 p.m. on Saturday.

6. Now that Oscars have oscared, the void fills with sleepers — the kinds of films you might regret missing after they slip past. Exhibit A: Peter Jackson's extraordinary homage to the British troops of World War 1, They Shall Not Grow Old, plays at the MV Film Center this weekend on Friday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

7. How about a mini-adventure? Head to Chappy for a Land Bank guided walk of Poucha Pond Reservation on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

8. Or make your own adventure by downloading the free TrailsMV app and going where you haven't dared to go before. (You won't get lost, GPS will show you where you are at all times.)

9. Or take yourself on a self-guided tour of Polly Hill Arboretum, which is open year-round, sunrise to sunset. There's plenty to see in the winter landscape and in the stone walls and structures throughout the property.

10. And if cabin fever really gets bad, don't forget you can go bowling or ice skating, take a Zumba class or even learn to knit.

Thursday, March 7, 2019

It seems we are now making headway, though we continue to row upstream. We capture an extra hour of evening light this weekend when Daylight Saving Time takes effect at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. Hurrah! Ospreys are returning to the Island, as are other migratory birds like red-winged blackbirds and tree swallows. A pansy was spotted in bloom by a front doorstep in Katama.

Anticipation can now officially begin: All the big summer dates have been announced.

Grand Illumination Night will be Wednesday, August 14.

The 158th Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair begins on Thursday, August 15.

The Oak Bluffs Fireworks will take place on Friday, August 16.

As fun and necessary as summer anticipation is, we realize you need something to get excited about soon. Good news — the 19th Annual Martha's Vineyard Film Festival begins Thursday, March 21. Even sooner: The new documentary film Apollo 11, based entirely on archival footage, opens at the MV Film Center with several showings this weekend, fresh from its premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Friday, March 8

The Oak Bluffs Library will host an opening reception for Island artist James S. Evans from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. tonight. Take a look at his landscapes and waterscapes painted with oil an canvas, then head to the movies if you like. Captain Marvel plays at the Edgartown Cinema at 6:45 p.m.; Apollo 11 shows at 7:30 p.m. at the film center.

Or you can head up to PathwaysArts in Chilmark at 7 p.m. to celebrate International Women's Day with the Women Live! event. Performances will include dance, spoken word, music, and belly dancing.

Saturday, March 9

The big event today is the annual Police v. Fire Hockey Game, this year benefiting Island Autism Group. Bring the little guys to the Touch-a-Truck event at 4 p.m., then meet and greet the players before the game begins at 5 p.m.

If you need to walk off some energy before you sit in the stands, you can take a winter walk at Polly Hill Arboretum at 10 a.m. (meet at the Visitors Center) or go for a winter safari on Chappy with the Trustees at either 9:30 a.m. or noon.

Tonight the Winter Yard welcomes Guggenheim Fellows and 2017 Bessie-award winners Myrna Packer and Art Bridgman, whose collaborative dance focuses on integrating live performance and video technology. The performance begins at 7 p.m.

Sunday, March 10

Remember to set your clocks forward one hour today. Wake up and head to Featherstone at 10 a.m., where VCS will conduct two winter walks simultaneously. A shorter walk will also include time for some nature-based creative expression, while a longer walk will suit the exercise-minded.

Classical ballet lovers will want to be at the film center today at 12:30 p.m. to see the Bolshoi Ballet performing The Sleeping Beauty. The West Tisbury Library's Second Sunday Jazz Concert features the Jeremy Berlin Trio today at 3:30 p.m.

If you haven't seen Best Picture-winner Green Book yet, catch it at Edgartown Cinema at 12:45 today. Apollo 11 is on screen at the film center at 4 p.m.

Thursday, March 14, 2019

On a recent visit to The Grey Barn and Farm in Chilmark we met a sheep named Cinna-bun, a cow named Donuts, and a dog named Ruby. We left with a piece of cheese called Bluebird. We stopped at 7aFoods for a Liz Lemon sandwich.

Later in the week, we drove down Lambert's Cove Road to Blackwater Farm to pick up some fresh eggs (and to say hi to the horses, sort of). Back on State Road, we were happy to see that Little House Café had just reopened, so we picked up some crispy fish tacos.

Yesterday, the brand new Martha's Vineyard Museum — and it's café — opened up in Vineyard Haven.

Tomorrow it's Daffodil Time. Next week is the first official day of spring. Things are looking up. Life is good.

Friday, March 15 | Never Idle

Start the weekend out in a good mood by stopping by the Edgartown library. Edgartown police chief Bruce McNamee will be doing a bagpipe demonstration from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Or visit the Oak Bluffs library, where Library Mini-Golf is back — for teens at 4 p.m. and adults at 6 p.m.

Keep on smiling tonight at the Comedy Lounge with a night of Gaelic vs. Garlic comedy. Corned beef vs. capicola? Guiness vs. Chianti? Irish and Italian comedians battle it out in this hysterical night of standup and audience interactive routines, featuring New York comedians Tom Briscoe and Mark Riccadonna. Acoustic rocker Johnny Mac provides the Irish sing-a-longs and the rock 'n roll.

The Wicked Good Musical Revue returns to the Playhouse at 7 p.m. tonight. And Pathways is hosting a celebration of gardens, landscaping and the environment with a multi-arts line-up that includes gardeners, farmers, and visual artists (7 p.m.).

Wonder Park and Captain Marvel are showing tonight at the Edgartown Cinema at 6:45. Apollo 11 is at the Film Center, showing at 7:30 p.m.

March 16 | Go Green

Take advantage of the Farm Institute's Seed Starting Workshop, happening today at 10 a.m., to get some of your garden veggies and flowers going.

Tonight you can eat your fill of corned beef and cabbage at the St. Patrick's Day dinner at the Federated Church (5:30 p.m.). Then head over to the P.A. Club for Spring Fling, featuring Jellybone Rivers and the Maniacs of the Heart, along with the Space Invaders. There will be a great silent auction, too — all to benefit the MV Public Charter School (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.).

There's also a Chilmark Potluck Jam tonight, 6:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center.

March 17 | Bells of Ireland

The 8th annual St. Patrick's Day parade starts in Edgartown on Dock Street this morning at 11 a.m.

This afternoon we're definitely going to be at the West Tisbury library for this event: Recycling Demystified on the Vineyard (3:30 p.m.). A panel of experts will answer our questions about what to do with all of our recycling on the Island.

And tonight we'll be with our Irish friends at the MV Film Center for a celebration of St. Patrick & Irish Culture. Molly Conole will be singing, traditional Irish soda bread and scones will be served, and a glass of Bailey's Cream will be yours to sip in the lobby prior to the evening entertainment, which includes a film showcasing Irish filmmaking (6:30 p.m.).

Thursday, March 21, 2019

In other places, March Madness or blooming magnolias signal the start of spring. Here, it's the appearance of painters, roofers, and contractors, followed closely by landscapers and stonemasons. It seems that around every corner, there's a ladder with someone atop it, a stack of shingles or paint supplies below.

Despite the lack of leafy things, the third week of March on the Vineyard delivered plenty of other beauty: screaming blue skies, a big bright full moon (coinciding with the first day of spring, no less), and stunning sunrises. Better still, the third week of March means the start of The 19th Annual Martha's Vineyard Film Festival in Chilmark.

This year's festival is the biggest yet, with 30 films telling stories from around the world, beginning with tonight's screening of Children of Bal Ashram, which is produced and directed by Vineyarders Len and Georgia Morris and Petra Lent McCarron. Take note that several of the Friday and Saturday evening screenings have already sold out. Buy your tickets for other screenings now, and we'll see you at the Hay Cafe.

Friday, March 22 | Movie and A Dinner

Catch one of the early screenings at the film festival this afternoon. Running with Beto shows at 3:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center and Won't You Be My Neighbor? is also showing at 3:30 p.m. over at PathwaysARTS. After an early movie, treat yourself to a nice dinner. The Terrace at the Charlotte Inn reopened this week with new chef Michael Rottman, and State Road restaurant reopens tonight. Or take a different tack: grab an early supper at Linda Jean's, which also just reopened, then head for the MV Film Center at 7:30 p.m. for the new film starring Ethan Hawke, First Reformed.

The Ritz reopened last week and there's live music all night tonight. Philly D + The Roundup is on at 7:45 p.m.; the Mike Benjamin Band takes the stage at 10 p.m.

Saturday, March 23 | Get Your Garden On

The first of a two-part class on caring for fruit trees happens at Polly Hill Arboretum this morning starting at 9 a.m. This class will focus on pruning, the second half (happening in June) will focus on management. Vineyard Haven Library hosts a class on regenerative backyard gardening at 10:30 a.m. If gardening isn't your thing but you'd like to get outside, the Friends of Sengekontacket could use your help planting beach grass on State Beach from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

There's a film for everyone tonight. Wonder Park (4:00 p.m.) and Captain Marvel (three times) are showing at Edgartown Cinemas. Apollo 11 (1:00 p.m.), The Charmer (4:00 p.m.) and First Reformed (7:30 p.m.) are at the MV Film Center, and you can see the film festival's screening of Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable at Pathways at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 24 | Peace and Grace

Start the day peacefully with a prayer hike through Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. Or head up to the Chilmark Community Center for the film festival's screening of The Biggest Little Farm at 10 a.m.

Go to an art reception or listen to music this afternoon. The West Tisbury First Congregational Church's Spring Forward Concert will showcase Brahms and Bach at 3 p.m. Across the street, The West Tisbury Public Library hosts a reception (2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) for their new group art show based on a theme around the color blue.

At 7:45 p.m., the film festival closes out with Amazing Grace, a film featuring the live footage of the recording of Aretha Franklin's chart-breaking gospel album.

Thursday, March 28, 2019

We've noticed on our up-Island jaunts that the critters are starting to poke their heads out of the barn. The oxen were grazing on Middle Road yesterday afternoon despite little to graze on. With the long days, hens are laying more, and eggs are plentiful. Baby chicks are arriving at the post office. On Facebook, precocious gardeners are posting photos of tiny seedlings they've started under grow lights or in a hoophouse.

Now we can all stare ardently at the ground in our perennial gardens, waiting for the first peony shoots to come up. Or if we've got asparagus beds, it will be just a few weeks before the first tips break through the soil. Crimson stalks of rhubarb will follow.

Best of all, on Tuesday the winning poster for the 158th Ag Fair was revealed, and winner Elissa Turnbull's colorful and whimsical illustration is a joyful valentine to the summer event we can now officially anticipate.

This weekend joy takes many forms: music of all kinds, great films, opera, art shows, meditation, pottery, bowling, even dodgeball. An Island-wide dodgeball tournament, no less.

Friday, March 29 | Art Smarts

Pick your art form — theater, music, or film. Start this afternoon with a great documentary about New York street photographer Gary Winogrand at the M.V. Film Center (4 p.m.). Winogrand used his Leica M4 to snap candid images of everyday people in 1960s and 1970s New York, yet it was only after his untimely death in 1984 that the influence and artistry of his work was celebrated. Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable is the first cinematic treatment of his work.

Tonight at the Playhouse, Scott Barrow directs Christopher Roberts in a special one-night only performance of White Rabbit Red Rabbit at 7 p.m. And up at PathwaysArts, David Stanwood will open a fabulous evening of piano music that will also include Paul Thurlow, Peter Halperin, and Griffin McMahon. Three Pianists and the Grand Piano begins at 7 p.m.

Saturday, March 30 | Let it Glow

Food lovers will want to reserve a spot at Chef Gavin Smith's pop-up dinner at Little House Cafe tonight at 5:30 p.m. The private caterer, also known as The Food Minded Fellow, will cook a three-course tasting menu.

Tonight you can go Glow Bowling. Or do Glow Yoga. Go figure! Glow bowling begins at 9:00 p.m. at Barn, Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs. Glow Yoga for Women is 6:45 p.m. at Eclipse Studio in Vineyard Haven.

Take in a reimagined Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare for the Masses tonight at the Playhouse (7 p.m.).

And this weekend, it's Dumbo-time at Edgartown Cinemas. The Tim-Burton directed Disney live-action remake shows three times both today and tomorrow.

Sunday, March 31 | Red Stripe and Reggae

In a tradition that began four years ago, the celebration of Jimmy Cliff's birthday takes place this year at the M.V. Film Center with the American premiere of the 1980 movie Babylon, which screened at Cannes but was deemed too controversial to show in the New York Film Festival that year. "Raw and smoldering," the story of a young reggae DJ features alluring cinematography and an unforgettable soundtrack. Join the celebration, which begins at 6:30 p.m., and enjoy Red Stripe beer and authentic Jamaican bites from Vineyard Caribbean.

If you missed Shakespeare for the Masses yesterday, it's on again this afternoon at 2 p.m. And if you missed David Stanwood Friday night, he's back at Pathways tonight at 7 p.m., this time with many musical friends and three pianos—one cabaret piano and two baby grands.

Thursday, April 4, 2019

In a small community like the off-season Vineyard, hardly a week goes by when there isn’t some type of grassroots fundraiser on the calendar. It might be a potluck or a dance party or a sporting event. It might be that a business is donating a percentage of sales to a local organization, like Bunch of Grapes bookstore does with its annual School Book Fair, happening this week. (The store donates 20 percent of all sales to Island school libraries during the week.)

And while there are a number of fundraisers coming up in the next few weeks, this weekend's Hay Barn Hoedown at the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society is likely to draw Vineyarders from all corners. In the aftermath of a devastating fire at Flat Point Farm on the morning of March 19, community members, farmers, artists, musicians and the Ag Society collaborated to create the potluck event, where dozens of Island musicians, including Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, The Pickpocket Blue Grass Band, Mike Benjamin, Phil DaRosa, Joanne Cassidy, Isaac Taylor and many more will be donating their time and talent to the evening, which will raise money to help rebuild Flat Point's main barn.

There will also be art and prints for sale from Island artists, including Kenneth Vincent, Craig Miner, Albert Fischer, Jocelyn Filley and Alison Shaw, among others. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday night and is $25 for adults, free for children.

Friday, April 5 | Music in the Air

The Wampanoag New Year Celebration, with traditional food, tribal drums, singing and dancing, kicks off at the Aquinnah Town Hall tonight at 5:30 p.m, whlie the Book Fair Kickoff Party is happening at Bunch of Grapes at 5 p.m. PathwaysArts presents A Classical Jazz Evening, with the quartet known as The Convertibles, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

And on the big screen, Dev Patel stars in The Wedding Guest, the globetrotting thriller showing at the M.V. Film Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. Dumbo, Shazam! and Pet Semetary are showing at Edgartown Cinemas tonight and all weekend. And there's live music at the Ritz and Alex's Place tonight, too.

Saturday, April 6 | For the birds

The Health Fair runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the hospital this morning. After you get yourself tuned up, you can learn how to tune up your trees at Polly Hill Arboretum in a Tree and Shrub Pruning Class. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., PHA Grounds Manager and Arborist Ian Jochems will demonstrate pruning techniques and will direct the class in hands-on practice on the grounds.

Tonight, music and Island history lovers will not want to miss the Island Community Chorus's Spring Concert which features a very special piece this year: a newly commissioned premiere performance of award-winning composer Thomas LaVoy's work In Heaven, Hereafter, based on the writings of West Tisbury's Nancy Luce, who was known for her love for her chickens. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Old Whaling Church and again at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Sunday, April 7 | All that Sparkles

Take a guided tour of the Southern Woodlands Reservation with Land Bank Ecologists today at 1 p.m. Or head to the MV Ice Arena for The Martha's Vineyard Figure Skating Club's 31rst annaul spring show, Once Upon a Dream: Children't Stories on Ice. The show (1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) will feature the club's skaters and special guest Indi Cha, the 2018 U.S. Intermediate Ladies National Champion.

At 4 p.m., head to Featherstone for the opening reception of a new show entitled Silver and Gold, featuring works from local artists. Gold leaf, silver gelatin prints, metal art, gold pendants, silver bracelets and more will come into play in this mixed media exhibit.

Thursday, April 11, 2019

There's a bodacious display of Easter candy at Alley's General Store. Flying Horses Carousel is opening on Saturday, April 13 (early this year!), with free lollipops for kids (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Grown-ups will be happy to know that Red Cat Kitchen reopened for the season in Oak Bluffs last week, Mocha Motts in Oak Bluffs is also open again, and the Atlantic reopened in Edgartown last week. And if that's all not delicious enough, you can also order an 850-gram Belgian chocolate gourmet egg (with your choice of fillings) from Sweet Bites in Vineyard Haven.

Now if your teeth aren't hurting too much, you can look forward to plenty of non-caloric (or calorie-burning) activities on the Island this weekend.

Friday, April 12 | Curry Favor

PathwaysArts shows the last of its Ocean-themed film shorts tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Wicked Good Musical Revue returns to the Playhouse tonight and tomorrow night at 7 p.m. And theater lovers won't want to miss tonight's live broadcast of the National Theatre's performance of All About Eve, starring Gillian Anderson and Lily James, at the Martha's Vineyard Film Center starting at 7:30 p.m. (Doors open one half hour before showtime.)

Edgartown Diner is hosting a Caribbean-themed evening tonight, with dishes like jerk chicken, jerk pork, and curry goat on the menu from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., followed by a DJ and entertainment from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Saturday, April 13 | Rain or shine

Start the day outside by volunteering in the Friendship Garden at the FARM Institute (9 a.m. to noon). Or head to Vineyard Gardens in West Tisbury for a Vegetable Garden workshop from 11 a.m. to noon. There's also a mushroom cultivation workshop at Polly Hill Arboretum with horticulturist Oliver Osnoss today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rainy Day in Vineyard Haven is having its annual Egg Hunt for Grown-Ups from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. this morning. And over at the new Martha's Vineyard Museum, research librarian Bow Van Riper hosts the museum's non-fiction book club meeting this morning at 10 a.m. This month's selection is The Enduring Shore by Paul Schneider.

Tonight, there's a super fun event at the Oak Bluffs library: Membership Down, The Oak Bluffs Public Library Game Show (7:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m). Featuring musical challenges, feats of derring-do and puzzling questions, the show asks three contestants to risk it all for the chance to win dollars for their favorite Island charity.

Sunday, April 14 | Celebration Services

Join in Palm Sunday services this morning at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or the Federated Church in Edgartown, or at the West Tisbury Congregational Church. Two riveting films are playing at the MV film center today: Diane at 4 p.m., The Wedding Guest at 7:30 p.m.

Monday, April 15 and Tuesday April 16 | Patriots and Town Fathers

Just a quick reminder that Monday is Patriots' Day, a holiday in Massachusetts. Patriots' Day commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord, the first in the American Revolutionary War. Since many folks won't be heading to work, the Trustees have organized a Patriots' Day Brickyard Hike (1:00 p.m.) to explore the ruins of the Chilmark Brick & Tile Factory and to hear stories of this once prosperous Island industry. Walkers will also be getting a sneak peek at the newest addition to the Menemsha Hills trail system.

On Tuesday, the very engaging Everett Poole, who's been the moderator of the Chilmark town meeting for 40 years, will be the featured guest at Tuesdays in the Newsroom: Tales from Town Meeting at the Vineyard Gazette offices. Join us at 5:30 p.m. for stories and laughter.

Thursday, April 18, 2019

Passover begins Friday night. Saturday is Earth Day. Sunday is Easter. And a large amount of rainfall is headed our way, naturally. But we are not going to let a little bad weather bother us. Tomorrow the Dairy Queen opens in Edgartown; why not start the holiday weekend with a Blizzard?

To better plan your schedule, here is a complete list of Easter services and Easter egg hunts.

And here is a list of egg hunts only (including an egg hunt + pony ride event at Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center!).

These are the movie offerings this weekend. Highlights include multiple showings of Diane and The Wedding Guest at the MV Film Center, and plenty of excitement at the Edgartown Cinema with multiple showings of Shazam!, Missing Link, and Us, plus showings of Dumbo and Captain Marvel.

Friday, April 19

Check out the movies (and popcorn) at both the Edgartown library and the West Tisbury library at 1 p.m. Tonight take the kids to the Big Moon Owl Prowl at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, starting at 7:30 p.m. Or take yourself to PathwaysARTS for the final We Dance event of the season (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.). Performances from a stellar line-up of Island talent plus DJ dancing afterwards.

Here is a list of Good Friday services and other community events happening today.

Saturday, April 20

If you've driven up-Island this week, perhaps you've noticed the stunning display (and lovely variety) of daffodils along State Road on the Polly Hill Arboretum property. Today is your chance to discover what those varieties are and to entertain your visiting family members at the same time at Polly Hill's Daffodil Day & Spring Celebration. The event is from 10 a.m to 2 p.m., but a guided tour begins at 11 a.m.

And today is the annual VCS Earth Day Beach Clean-Up event, starting at 10 a.m. It's easy to participate, because representatives from VCS will be at all of your favorite beaches with supplies for collecting trash. Afterwards, have lunch with your fellow trash collectors at the Oak Bluffs Sailing Camp.

Tonight is the annual Shellfish Extravaganza, a benefit for the Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group. Head to the Chilmark Community Center at 6 p.m. for local oysters and clams, chowder, and dancing to Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish.

If you're looking for a nice meal out, Beach Road restaurant in Vineyard Haven and l'etoile in Edgartown reopen this weekend.

Sunday, April 21

Thursday, April 25, 2019

Okay, okay, we get it: April showers bring May flowers. But enough is enough already! We are ready for full-on springtime weather perfect for getting the garden ready, taking a stroll through the woods, or maybe even just spending some time on the back deck catching some rays.

Yes, another wet weekend is in the forecast, but here on the Island many events happen rain or shine! Attend a garden workshop, go on a beach safari, or maybe even a birding expedition.

If the outdoors just isn’t in the cards for you, the MV Film Society is having their third annual Spectrum (LGBTQ+) Film Festival. Not a movie goer? Okay, how about joining a new book club, or belting out your favorite song at a Karaoke Dance Party?

And for all you sports fans out there, don’t forget to cheer on the Bruins and Celtics! Both teams are heading into the second round of the playoffs. The Bs kick-off their first game against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at 7 p.m. And the Cs have their sights set on the Milwaukee Bucks. First game date for them still to be determined.

Whatever you end up doing this weekend, enjoy it to the fullest. Rain or shine, the good weather is headed our way. Summer is near. And we can’t wait.

Friday, April 26

Wake up, wake up, it’s Friday! Grab a cup of coffee from your favorite spot and head to the Manual F. Correllus State Forest to lend a hand during Park Serve Day from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. After doing your good deed for the day take a drive up to Polly Hill Arboretum for their Arbor Day celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. Activities include a guided tour, a tree planting demonstration and a seedling giveaway.

Come nighttime, PathwaysARTS Season Finale kicks off at 7 p.m. in their spot which will magically turn back into the Chilmark Tavern in a few weeks. Enjoy writing & poetry, dance and musical performances. If you’re looking to see one of the film fest movies, the Film Center is showing The Happy Prince at 5 p.m. and Wild Night with Emily at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, April 27

If you weren’t able to help out at the state forest yesterday, you still have a chance to be a philanthropist today at Felix Neck’s Volunteer Day from 9 a.m. to noon. This statewide event is in its 13th year and will end in a BBQ for all volunteers.

If you love cute, fluffy animals, then you don’t want to miss Island Alpaca’s annual Shearing Day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) where more than 50 alpacas will get their yearly haircut. After some fun on the farm, head to the rink for the Ice Savours Hockey Game beginning at 1 p.m. Cheer on the Martha’s Vineyard Mariners as they take on the Boston Bruins Alumni Team – proceeds benefit the ice arena.

Tonight starting at 7 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theater, a concert titled That's Island Entertainment will showcase Island musicians performing movie classics in celebration of "the greatest video store of all time." And over at the MV Playhouse, enjoy a staged reading of Mothers and Sons at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, April 28

Oh, sweet Sunday. Get up early, take a scenic drive up to Aquinnah, and then put on some gloves to, you guessed it, volunteer! Thursday, May 2, 2019

Two words we can't get enough of this week: Opening Day. Little League season opened on Saturday. The new restaurant at the Clarion Inn in Edgartown, Town Bar and Grill MV, opened on Monday. Yesterday was opening day at Dilly's Taqueria in Oak Bluffs, and 20byNine restaurant opens for the season at 4 p.m. today. Tomorrow in Edgartown, Morning Glory Farm opens in the morning, Bad Martha's Brewery opens at noon.

Don't worry, there's plenty to do beyond eating and drinking this weekend. Catch a fish, go for a hike, ride a bike (for a good cause), make art, watch a sheep-shearing, watch a film. Or just stand still and imagine you can see the cherry blossoms bloom, the first asparagus tips poke from the ground, the fiddlehead ferns unfurl. In the blink of an eye, spring slips by on the Vineyard.

Friday, May 3 | TGIF

Take your pick tonight. Bid on Patriots and Red Sox tickets at the annual PA Club Scholarship Auction at 6 p.m. It's PechaKucha night at the Museum (7 p.m to 8:30 p.m.). Admission is free; bring a non-perishable donation for the Island Food Pantry.

Thursday, May 9, 2019

This morning the Vineyard sky was the color of polished silver, washed with that strange post-shower luminosity. The sea lay down, calm and inky and unobtrusive, while the true spectacle — tiny chartreuse leaves — unfurled from the tangle of bare branches lining the horizon. Despite nature's best efforts, spring in all its damp, cool, windy glory, has arrived on the Vineyard. Red tulips line white picket fences in Edgartown, and the town is ready to host Pink and Green Weekend in honor of mom. All over the Island, everyone is celebrating, even our pets; don't miss the Dog Show and The Blessing of the Animals, both on Saturday.

Friday, May 10 | Go Green

Start off the Pink and Green Weekend with a visit to Donaroma's Nursery from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for a Mother Earth Celebration that includes crafts, refreshments, a labyrinth, and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Club from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Or if you'd rather do chocolate than chili, hit the Murdick's Fudge Open House in Edgartown.

Gardeners, this weekend you've got a chance to do some special plant shopping at the Annual Plant Sale at the Greenhouse in Oak Bluffs (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the high school's annual plant sale, which features plants grown by horticulture students (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.).

The Mini-Maker Faire is on at the Ag Hall today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Minnesingers perform An American Mosaic tonight at 7 p.m. In fact there is so much going on today (art receptions, workshops, music and more), that we encourage you to check out a full list of today's events here.

The event is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a rain date of May 18.

Plus: Free Mother's Day portraits at the West Tisbury library from 2 p.m to 4 p.m.

Thursday, May 16, 2019

Forget the weather. We have bigger fish to fry this weekend. And lobster rolls to eat — the first Grace Church Lobster Rolls of the season. We've got wine to drink. And restaurant openings to attend. And let's not forget breakfast at Biscuits.

It may not be fair to mention all this good stuff in front of those of you who are running in the Martha's Vineyard Marathon and Half-Marathon on Saturday. But hey, we're going to do our part and get out and join the 5K Fun Run/Walk for Island Autism on Sunday at Katama Airfield.

And we can all meet up at the movies. Hotel Mumbai comes to the MV Film Center this weekend and the Keanu Reeves thriller John Wick: Chapter Three is onscreen at Edgartown Cinemas.

Friday, May 17 | Bottled Up

Tonight you can B.Y.O.B. to Chilmark Tavern (first night of the season) or you can treat yourself to a five-course wine dinner at l'etoile in Edgartown. Hang around town afterwards and hear Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish at The Port Hunter.

Today you can join a guided walk of Caroline Tuthill Preserve in Edgartown with Sheriff's Meadow at 10 a.m. or attend a workshop in basic landscape design at Vineyard Gardens at 11 a.m. Before you head out, gather all those old electronics you've been wondering what to do with and plan a drop-off at Martha's Vineyard Community Services. As a bonus, drop-off fees for Spring Electronics Disposal Day (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) benefit MVCS.

The Martha's Vineyard Children's Chorus performs at Union Chapel this evening at 5 p.m. And over at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, you can watch the moon rise over Sengekontacket Pond from a kayak at the full-moon event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

And for a feel-good end to the day, head to the Ritz to hear the Brothers McMahon at the Holy Rock and Roll Revival between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Thursday, May 23, 2019

On Friday, Vineyard kids start the long Memorial Day weekend off with a march to the sea, lilac blossoms and branches of rhododendron clutched tightly in hand. Some have memorized the Gettysburg address, some have learned to play Taps. Everyone sings. Joined by their teachers and Island veterans, together they toss flowers into the harbor — Menemsha Harbor, Vineyard Haven Harbor, Edgartown Harbor. If we are lucky, it will be a warm and sunny day, a beautiful day to pay tribute to the men and women who've fallen in service since the Civil War. But grey skies or blue, we'll look back in gratitude. And then we'll look forward, thankful for the good fortune of spending a summer on Martha's Vineyard.

We'll start with a blissfully long weekend of good food, song and dance, hayrides, art shows, films, picnics, plant sales, garden tours, and lighthouse tours.

And more. This weekend, we urge Island Time readers to enjoy the curated selection of events which the newsletter offers, but also to visit the complete Martha's Vineyard Calendar to find out about dozens of other happenings all over the Island.

Friday, May 24 | Art and Science

The fifth annual Environmental Film Festival is happening this weekend at the M.V. Film Center. The theme is Nature as Inspiration, and the festival combines films with community discussions and a special art exhibit by high school students. A Climate Change Panel takes place at the film center at 4 p.m., and tonight's feature at 7:30 p.m. is Into the Canyon, the riveting story of two men who walked the entire 750-mile length of the Grand Canyon.

Art galleries are opening around the Island today, including the The Kara Taylor Gallery in West Tisbury. Also in West Tisbury, the Artism for Autism fundraiser happens at the Ag Hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

And if you're looking for live music, check out options everywhere from Bad Martha Farmer's Brewery to the Atlantic, the Ritz, the Port Hunter and more.

Thursday, May 30, 2019

There should be a cartoon (Paul Karasik, help!) for the dueling emotions Islanders feel when summer starts. Oh, boy — Old friends! Blue sky! Warm sand! (Our inner Snoopy.) and Oh no — Traffic! Lines! Traffic! Lines! (The Charlie Brown attitude.)

This weekend we were definitely channeling Snoopy; it was hard to be grumpy with the weather so luxurious, the evening light so generous. Ospreys, rhododendrons, tomato seedlings, bird nests, beach shells, sea glass, souvenir flags — we started the collections of flotsam and jetsam that wash up on our decks and back porches and outdoor showers all summer long, the things that will write the story of summer 2019.

Despite the traffic and the lines and yes, the ticks and the parking tickets, we will turn our heads on Labor Day and look back, wishing we could wrangle the whole passel of days into a time capsule.

Friday, May 31 | Night Light

From the traditional to the sublime, you've got dinner options to choose from tonight. You could hang out in Owen Park with a lobster roll from Grace Church (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) or you could head to the Loft for a pizza buffet, a Dine to Donate event that benefits MV United Soccer. Or you could treat yourself to opening night at Bettini, the Harbor View's new fine dining restaurant.

For fun tonight, try Trivia Night at Bad Martha Farmer's Brewery (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or PechaKucha night at the M.V. Museum (7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.). Country singer Charlie Marie is on stage at the Ritz at 7 p.m. and Brad Tucker plays at the Port Hunter at 10 p.m. Prefer a movie? Godzilla, King of the Monsters and Rocketman are both showing at the Edgartown Cinema tonight if you like shock and awe. Want something truly sweet? Go see Photograph at the M.V. Film Society at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 1 | Walk the Walk

Lace up your walking shoes and take part in the Annual Cross-Island Hike, which starts this year at Blackwater Pond Reservation at 8:30 a.m. and ends at the Big Bridge, State Beach, Edgartown. The route is 15.2 miles long, but you can walk part or half of it. The Martha's Vineyard March for Heroes is also happening today. Marchers will carry backpacks on the marathon-length walk that benefits Island Veterans' organizations.

There's also a climate change walk at Felix Neck at 10 a.m. and Sassafras Education hosts their Saturday Youth Spring Explore adventure at 10 a.m. So there's no excuse for anyone in the family to lie on the couch.

Thursday, June 6, 2019

You know where we will be Saturday morning at 9 a.m. when the bell rings: at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, shopping bags in hand, waiting for the West Tisbury Farmers' Market to open for its 45th season. With more than 40 Island vendors, longtime family farms and up-and-coming entrepreneurs alike, this is our one-stop, open-air source for everything locally grown—from flowers for the table to meats, vegetables, breads and desserts.

But first, we party! Tonight's Best of the Vineyard Awards bash at Farm Neck kicks off at 6 p.m. and we still have some tickets—they'll be available at the door. Join us under the tent for an evening of food, drink and fun as we celebrate the winners. It's the perfect way to usher in the summer.

Friday, June 7 | Arbor or Harbor

Today's forecast is for good strolling weather. Take the ferry to Chappaquiddick to meander with an arborist through the Japanese-inspired Mytoi garden at 11 a.m., learn about Edgartown's maritime history on a walking tour of the harbor front (12:30 p.m.) or visit one of the Island's most popular farms for an Island Alpaca walk (2 p.m.). Edgartown Cinemas has Dark Phoenix and The Secret Life of Pets 2 tonight.

Thursday, June 13, 2019

What is so rare as a day in June? In our humble opinion, a whole weekend of things to do on Martha's Vineyard in the early summertime. Farmstands are bursting with Island grown produce, ice cream shops are open, and at the beaches, water temperatures have reached the upper 60s. You might not be ready to jump off the Jaws bridge yet, but there's every reason to dive into summer.

Friday, June 14 | Stars, Stripes and Strawberries

Happy Flag Day! Of course, Island towns show their patriotic pride with American flags every day, as you'll see strolling through Edgartown, Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven. From certain vantage points, you can see Old Glory flying from half a dozen or more staffs and masts, ashore and afloat. Just for fun, see how many you can count.

If you hit Morning Glory Farm on the early side, you might be able to score some fresh Island strawberries. The farmstand opens at 8 a.m. on weekdays and if the weather has been dry, the strawberries usually come in around 10 a.m. Berries in hand, grab a coffee or fresh-from-the-tap kombucha and kick back on the shady porch to watch the world go by.

At the Grange Exchange, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in West Tisbury, you can shop for vintage treasures from multiple Vineyard dealers. Feeling adventurous? Take a Kayak Quest at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, following rhyming clues on a self-guided educational tour of Sengekontacket Pond.

On the big screen, Edgartown Cinemas has Shaft (R) at 3:45 p.m. and 9 p.m., Late Night (R) at 6:30 p.m., Men In Black International (PG-13) at 3:45 p.m. and in 3D at 6:30 p.m. and Rocketman (R) at 9 p.m.

Drop in any time between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to take part in the week's scheduled Barnyard Buddies pursuits, which could include egg collecting, feeding the goats, a bunny circle and/or a farm storytime.

More fun for the little ones: Chilmark Community Church is hosting a free fair for young children from 10 a.m. to noon, with pony rides, a bouncy house, cupcakes and old-fashioned games. All ages are welcome at West Tisbury's Old Fashioned Town Picnic from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall. BYO picnic and a dessert dish to share; lemonade, water, live music, hayrides, a fire truck, animals and face painting are provided.

Celebrate Father's Day early at the Aquinnah Public Library's Dogs for Dad BBQ from noon to 2 p.m., or bring the paterfamilias to Sea Smoke's Mass Axes Grand Opening Axeathon in Oak Bluffs, where he can be one of the first to own a limited-edition Oak Bluffs Bullseye T-shirt. Axe throwing runs from noon to 7 p.m. at the popular barbecue joint on Oakland avenue just off Dukes County avenue.

If you're in Chilmark this afternoon stop by the Chilmark library at 2:30 for the opening of photographer Ray Ewing's fascinating new exhibit, The Ancient World in America.

Tonight, catch the new Rhode Island heist flick Vault at the Martha's Vineyard Film Center in a special showing with director Tom DeNucci, as well as producer Chad A. Verdi and editor Zared Shai, who are both Vineyard business owners. The film follows a gang of small-time criminals who in 1975 decide to steal more than $30 million from the R.I. Mafia. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 16 | A Day for Dad

If you're lucky enough to have a dad with you this Father's Day weekend, take him out for a sumptuous meal at one of the Vineyard's favorite brunch spots: Artcliff Diner and the Black Dog Tavern in Vineyard Haven, Linda Jean's in Oak Bluffs, Right Fork Diner in Edgartown and State Road in West Tisbury are all solid choices (with alcoholic beverages for those who partake).

The fifth annual Father’s Day Car-B-Q Classic car show and picnic brings a bevy of sweet rides from the last century to the lawn of the Martha's Vineyard Museum, overlooking Lagoon Pond in Vineyard Haven, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s free (food and drink is available for purchase) and museum admission is included. Got a pre-1989 vehicle you’re proud of? Enter it to vie for trophies. In case of rain, check for updates on vineyardgazette.com.

At the movies, The Secret Life of Pets screens at 4:30 p.m. in the historic Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs. Live acoustic music with Adam Natusch starts at 4:30 at The Cardboard Box on Circuit avenue and at the Ritz, the Brothers McMahon's Holy Rock & Roll Revival begins at 7 p.m.

The long-awaited Toy Story 4 is on screen at Edgartown Cinema with two showings this afternoon and four tomorrow. It's also playing at The Strand in Oak Bluffs over the weekend.

There's a Summer Solstice BBQ Kickoff at the FARM Institute at 5 p.m. and Garde East restaurant in Vineyard Haven is having a special solstice dinner tonight that includes drinks on the deck afterwards with Mark Alan Lovewell explaining the night sky and entertaining with folk songs.

Some of the Vineyard's best-loved summer traditions return this weekend, including weekly screenings of Jaws and Sunday night band concerts in Island parks. Fortunately, the days are at their longest now, so we can pack a lot into the time we have before July arrives and things really get busy. Here are some best bets for the weekend to come.

Friday, June 28 | Start with art

This doesn't happen every day: Old Sculpin Gallery, housed in a historic boatbuilder's shop on the Edgartown waterfront, is having a YART sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Martha's Vineyard Art Association are cleaning out their studios and that's your chance to pick up easels, frames, books, supplies and original art works.

From 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Edgartown, try your hand at making ice cream at the Farm Institute's Friday Fun Day. You can sample three different methods for making summer's favorite melty treat, or just go with one. There's a new family activity every Friday afternoon at the educational farm, located on Aero avenue in Katama.

Or grab a cone at the nearest ice-cream shop and head to the Capawock Theatre in Vineyard Haven, which begins its regular summer Friday screenings of Jaws at 4:30 p.m.

For night life, catch Island favorites the Brothers McMahon at the Port Hunter in Edgartown, starting at 10 p.m.

Saturday, June 29 | Get your goat

Sheep, pigs, ducks and pygmy goats are waiting to meet you at Native Earth Teaching Farm in Chilmark, which welcomes families from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through early September. Goats in particular will be showcased today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., when the Kids on the Roof 4-H goat club members will share what they're learning about goats and even show you how to hold a baby goat (kid).

Goats are also the topic of a talk by Emily Fischer of Flat Point Farm, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carnegie in Edgartown. She'll talk about how the small-scale production of soap and cheese is helping to sustain her family's farm, and share samples of her skin care products. Will a baby goat make an appearance? We can't rule it out.

The Yard in Chilmark presents Ain Gordon and Josh Quillen in their spoken-word performance, Radicals in Miniature, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Show time is 7 p.m.

Toy Story 4 plays the Strand Theatre in Oak Buffs at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. On stage, Dear Elizabeth—a play in letters, based on the passionate 30-year friendship of two American writers—begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse and Alex's Place at the Y hosts an all-ages show by the Jelly Roll Horns with Sabrina from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Sunday, June 30 | All day music

The Martha's Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven welcomes all ages to its Grand Opening Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with games on the lawn, food trucks, live music and free museum admission including the new Thomas Hart Benton exhibition, Benton's Martha's Vineyard.

The Vineyard Haven Band begins its summer season of Sunday-night concerts in the park at 8 p.m. on the Ocean Park bandstand in Oak Bluffs. Down the street at the Strand, the 30th-anniversary restoration of Spike Lee's acclaimed Do the Right Thing screens at 7:30 p.m. and in the Trinity Park Tabernacle, Black Violin performs at 8 p.m.

Thursday, July 4, 2019

The glorious Fourth is here at last, when Island celebrations start early and go on long after the last embers from the fireworks have fallen into Edgartown Harbor. If you're heading to Edgartown for the parade, or just the pyrotechnics after dark, keep in mind that parking will be closed at 3 p.m. on Main street, North Water street, Fuller street and Morse street, and at 4 p.m. Main street and North Water street will be closed to traffic. Main street will reopen after the parade and North Water street will reopen after the fireworks.

By day we are madly soaking up any rays of sun we can. Trips to Lucy for a walk on the beach. A stop at Chilmark Chocolates to stock up. Landing by the fire at the winter farmers’ market, and gathering our circle of friends in tight to bolster our winter-readiness. The early sunsets (4:30 p.m.) have been shocking; they never fail to bring on relentless second-guessing of how one has spent the long days, now that they are past for the year. The silver lining is the cookie-cutter crescent moon and twinkling stars in the early evening sky.

This weekend we will do the kind of thing we do best in the off-season: Come out to support each other. A musical benefit for Sabrina Luening, a well-known singer who was airlifted to Boston two weeks ago after suffering a stroke, will be held at The Cardboard Box on Saturday night. Doors will open at 4 p.m. There are many more ways to join the circle this weekend. Read on for our suggestions, and visit the complete Vineyard Gazette calendar for more.

Friday, November 8 | To the Lighthouse

Halloween is over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be spooked — in the theater. “The Lighthouse,” the new film starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson is “a hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.” If the trailer is any indication, we’ll be looking over our shoulders on the drive home from the MV Film Center. The film begins at 7:30 p.m.

For a cheerier evening, join the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard folks at the PA Club for “A Celebration of 1000 Loves, Lives and Tails” with live music from Maggie’s Kitchen (5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) Or take in Island Theater Company’s musical review of the songs of Fiddler on the Roof, tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society (repeat performances Saturday and Sunday). You could also head for the MV Playhouse, where the Winter Yard performs an evening of short plays called Pang! starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday, November 9 | Workshop It

West Tisbury is the place to be this morning with a fall walk scheduled at the Arboretum (9 a.m.), the winter farmers’ market at the ag hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Duck Day at Long Point Wildlife Refuge from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Later on, pick from two opportunities to make floral decorations with the talented Morrice Florist folks: A Fall Wreath Workshop begins at the Carnegie at 1 p.m.; a Thanksgiving Tablescape class – that includes cooking three Thanksgiving sides – runs from 4 to 6 p.m at the FARM Institute.

Tonight there's a Harvest Dinner starting at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven; have a bite before heading to Oak Bluffs for the Sabrina Leuning benefit. More scary movies tonight: Stephen King's Doctor Sleep and Terminator: Dark Fate are on the screen at Edgartown Cinemas.

Sunday, November 10 | Sundays are the Best Days

Something for everyone today: An artisan fair at the Hebrew Center (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), a VCS winter walk through the State Forest (10 a.m.), The Polar Express at the MV Film Center at 1 p.m., Fiber Folks at the Ag Hall at 1 p.m., and Second Sunday Jazz at the West Tisbury Library at 3:30 p.m. Wind up the day with the Holy Rock + Roll Revival at the Ritz at 7:30 p.m.
