Islanders who want to safely dispose of unwanted prescription medications can take them to the West Tisbury police department on Saturday.

Island police responded to a number of drunk driving incidents over the weekend. In Oak Bluffs there were two separate arrests for operating under the influence.

West Tisbury police announced Monday morning that Daniel Gouldrup, a longtime officer with the town, had died at home of apparent natural causes. Officer Gouldrop was 59, police said.

West Tisbury police officer Matt Gebo was officially promoted to sergeant last week.

Matthew Mincone was officially sworn in as the chief of police in West Tisbury, taking over for Daniel Rossi who announced his retirement in the fall.

The town police department is completing the last steps in the process of gaining accreditation from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. It is first department on the Island to apply.

West Tisbury selectmen expeditiously selected Lieut. Matt Mincone to succeed Dan Rossi as West Tisbury police chief at Wednesday night’s meeting, drawing enthusiastic applause.

It’s all but certain Lieut. Matt Mincone will serve as the next West Tisbury chief of police starting in April. The selectmen hosted a forum for him Wednesday night.

Dan Hanavan in Tisbury and Dan Rossi in West Tisbury have announced plans to retire, leaving vacancies in the top police job in two of the six Island towns.

Tisbury and West Tisbury police are investigating the theft of mail from several mailboxes in the Lambert’s Cove area.
