Chilmark is alive and well. I am enjoying the foggy morning with sunshine breaking through the light mist...a promise of another nice day that we can enjoy without guilt because of the heavy rains just past. I realize how appreciated that rain was as I watch a flock of little birds drinking from a hole in the old tree outside my window.
Chilmark is enjoying some most welcome fall days with temperatures and sunshine at acceptable levels...so nice. Many fishermen have arrived and are eagerly fishing their favorite spots for the ever-elusive winning fish in the annual Martha’s Vineyard fishing derby. Good luck to all!
Chilmark did not provide us with the beautiful weekend that I promised you at the end of last week’s column. So much for writing a column almost a week ahead of time. The tropical storm rolled in for the weekend and provided many with an extra day or two of vacation.
Chilmark is slowing down just a bit and the speed and intensity of most activities has slowed just a bit. There is still plenty going on and not many parking places available. The sunsets are just as lovely and the water is warm for swimming so we are far from done with summer, just catching our breath.
Chilmark heads into the last days of August. They are often believed to be the hardest days of summer to survive. I will go on record and tell you that Chilmark is still in vacation mode with smiles more in abundance than otherwise. I visited both Chilmark Store and Menemsha Market and found folks still upbeat and cheerful.
Chilmark heads into the last two weeks of summer with lots of enthusiasm and plenty of plans yet to be realized.
Chilmark is still enjoying the happy memories of two mid-summer events that took place last week.
Chilmark in August . . . even the President and his family know that this is the best place to be in August! Welcome to them and to all who look forward to spending time in August here. Let’s all relax and enjoy the many moods of a summer resort.
Chilmark movie maker Thomas Bena, who is the executive and creative director of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, will be screening his movie, One Big Home, on Friday, July 29 at the Chilmark Community Center at 8 p.m.
