Chilmark prepared for the Fourth of July in great style. We had a double rainbow one evening, the appearance of a full moon another, along with beautiful beach days and the arrival of many friends and family members. It should make for many happy memories for us all.

Chilmark is in high summer mode as the 4th of July weekend approaches. The roads and beaches and shops are busy with visitors and the Community Center is gearing up for the next month of activity. The arrival of summer and the influx of visitors always seem to surprise us in spite of the weeks of preparation we have been at work on!

Chilmark Town Column: July 20

Chilmark is steamy tonight as I sit down to write on Wednesday night. The threatened thunderstorm of an hour or so ago has gone up the Sound without leaving us a single drop of much-needed rain. We are hoping there may be some more storms in the neighborhood. The week of really hot weather has created crispy lawns and parched gardens. Somebody please do the rain dance!

Chilmark joins the rest of the Island in welcoming the vacationers who will begin our busy season with their Memorial Day visits and celebrations. There are many entertainments planned and if the sun stays with us, we will all celebrate!

Chilmark was given a preview look at the Lynx, the replica of the 1812 privateer that paid a five-day visit to the Vineyard Haven harbor. She was anchored off our shores the night before going down-Island, and a pretty sight she was.

Chilmark sends best wishes to Susan Larsen and her daughter, Brigida, as they prepare for the two day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this weekend in Boston. Susan will walk 39.3 miles and Brigida will speak at the opening ceremonies and join the youth group that supports the walkers on their two-day adventure. We hope Susan has made her fundraising goal.

There will be a flea market at the Community Center on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and lunch will be available.

Chilmark welcomed the rains of this week past. What was not ready before the rains are surely blooming now. The pink and white dogwood trees along the North Road and lilac bushes lucky enough to be in the sun are already in bloom. What will we do for Memorial Day flowers? The cherry and other fruit trees are already moving on and the shadbushes are everywhere in bloom. No dull rides up-Island these days.

Chilmark is all about town meeting this week. We convene at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 23 for our annual spring town meeting. Voting by ballot will take place on Wednesday at the Community Center with polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It will provide us all with an opportunity to say thanks and farewell to our outgoing selectman, Frank Fenner Jr. who has served us for 10 and a half years. We will miss him around town hall and his contributions to town business.
