Chilmark’s September is acting like August. There are still many visitors, lots of gatherings and plenty of cars on the road. Let’s hope we can all keep up with things for a while longer.
Chilmark continues to enjoy the mild temperatures and mostly sunny days of this extended fall season. It is hard to focus, as we must, on the upcoming holiday events and necessary travels included. How many times a day do you hear global warming in local conversations?
There are many dates for activities that you will want to make notes of on your calendars, so I will proceed with notes from my many e-mails.
Chilmark says goodbye to another August. It was an eventful one with earthquakes, a presidential visit, a hurricane and more. The town lost a few trees and a lot of visitors to Irene. Most of our visitors on short vacations left early, only, I fear, to return to worse conditions in Connecticut, New York and other New England locations than we suffered here.
The holiday weekend swept through Chilmark as it always does, with lots of chores still to do and the first wave of visitors here hoping for fun in the sun. The weather tried to please everyone but there was a lot of fog on occasion. Everyone seemed happy to be here and that is what makes it a holiday weekend. The parades and speeches helped to focus on the meaning of the weekend and that was good.
Chilmark has endured another long week of poor weather. As I write on Wednesday, though, the sun is out and the smiles are everywhere. It seems that this pattern will continue through our Memorial Day weekend and that will be very nice for all.
This Saturday the Chilmark Community Church will offer a Yard and Plant Sale at the Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be household goods for sale and, for the first time, they will offer lobster rolls to go.
Chilmark will have many choices of eating places this week. The air should be full of the good smells of food! The Galley opened yesterday for the season; the Bite will open today at 11 a.m.; the Tavern will open May 23 and the Home Port will open on May 25. The Menemsha Fish Market, Larsen’s Fish Market and the Menemsha Café are all already going strong.
Chilmark seems anchored, although we have been buffeted by strong winds for what seems like weeks but is really only days of this past week. The crane operators hard at work on the projects in Menemsha Basin continued through most of the blustery days, with extra care applied. As I write on Wednesday, the winds are still blowing with gusts over 30 but now the skies are bluewill it last?
