Chilmark looks like Dubai this week . . . great tall building cranes everywhere you look. Actually, there are three of them and they were all working at the same time some days this week. One is working for the town of Chilmark, rebuilding the way out to the fill dock; one is working for the U.S. Coast Guard on their dock and the third is working for a private home owner replacing a dock. I suspect manning the cranes has been a challenge with the strong winds that hung around Chilmark all week.

Chilmark is snowless as I write midweek. We are eyeing the next storm coming along and hoping it also brings us rain.

Chilmarkers know how to throw a good party. On Wednesday, the ladies of the Women’s Symposium group joined the members of the Friends of the Chilmark Library to share their culinary and party making talents and create a wonderful birthday party for Rhoda Diamond, who celebrated a significant day! She was genuinely surprised and enjoyed the moment. Cheers from us all, Rhoda, and best wishes for a grand year!

Chilmark is enduring yet another winter storm as I write. Whiteout conditions midday Wednesday and then sunshine with dry skies. It was a mixed bag of weather but nothing to match what our off-Island friends across New England had to deal with.

Regrets to Zee Gamson whose name I consistently spelled wrong last week. Just a misguided typo! Sad to say that even with all the hi-tech appliances, we still have to rely on our typing skills.

Chilmark is enduring the usual New England spring; cold and windy but with offerings of surprising green areas in the lee corners of yards and fields. Don’t you wonder why the same temperature in March seems so much colder than in January?

I forgot to tell you last week that we saw an osprey on the nest on Lobsterville Road on March 13! Now they are everywhere so it is not news but just a happy sign of the coming spring.

Chilmark starts the new year in a melancholy way having to say goodbye to women who each leave many memories among the Chilmark population. We will all miss each of them as each made their unique contributions to Chilmark.

Chilmark joins the rest of the world in grieving for the many lost and injured in the terrible events in Japan this week. It is hard to truly comprehend the damage. It seems far away and yet, with the amazing pictures, it seems to be next door. As always when we suffer these events of nature, I wonder what the Chilmark connection will be.

The no-snow claim is still valid for Chilmark. The snows of midweek are gone and we are clear underfoot. A brief trip off-Island this week showed me all the snow I need to see this winter.

Chilmark Town Column: July 20

Chilmark is steamy tonight as I sit down to write on Wednesday night. The threatened thunderstorm of an hour or so ago has gone up the Sound without leaving us a single drop of much-needed rain. We are hoping there may be some more storms in the neighborhood. The week of really hot weather has created crispy lawns and parched gardens. Somebody please do the rain dance!
