I drove to my bank and looked through the window and saw a customer service representative at the desk with a baseball cap on. “Huh,” I thought, “it isn’t even dress-down Friday.” I entered Martha’s Vineyard Co-operative bank and, guess what? Every employee was dressed in Red Sox regalia.
“Is it Halloween?” I asked. “Or am I in the Red Sox dugout?” Turns out, for solidarity, all bank employees dressed for the Sox on Wednesday.
My favorite seven-letter word: amnesty! All Island libraries are offering their annual amnesty on books, tapes, and DVDs now through Dec. 31. Librarians always like a fresh start for the new year.
Back from Iraq: West Tisbury school principal Mike Halt has returned to the Island. Another marine, Duncan MacMullen, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Class of 2004, got off the boat last Monday morning and was greeted by a color guard, fire trucks, the Tisbury police chief, and many friends and well-wishers. Thank you both for your service and welcome home.
I am writing from my Old Country. I returned Nonna last Thursday so she could prepare for her Italian classes which begin next week. Iole really enjoyed spending her summer on the Vineyard, visiting numerous art openings, and seeing all her Island friends. We brought her three granddogs with us as they, like their mother, hadn’t been off-Island all summer. The weather has been beautiful here, they are enjoying their many walks.
Kids on the corners — how fast this summer flew by, and now they’re lining up for the buses. We wish all students the best for the coming school year. Keep an eye out on the roads, especially in the mornings and at dismissal time.
Those harvest suppers roll around quickly. It’s time for the annual one at the Stone Church on Saturday, Oct. 25 (that’s a week from tomorrow). There will be two seatings, 5 and 6:30 p.m. I know from past experience that reservations fill up quickly, so call Karen Jaffe at 508-680-6310 to book your spot for turkey, all the fixings, and pies to die for. I’ll see you there.
