So much to say about Linda Marinelli. I have an autographed copy of her book Never Say Die, subtitled “the private life and political thunder of a dying breed,” and I treasure it and re-read it frequently.
Linda’s life spanned over decades, with all kinds of work, family and friendships. “Some of the experiences of my political life taught me the importance of honesty, dedication and the law,” I quote from her book.
Well, I’m not as crazy as I thought I was, but I’ll bet I’m still crazier than you think I am. When I did my mea culpa last week for initially misinforming you of the date of the Robby Burns birthday supper (annually put on by the Scottish Society of Martha’s Vineyard), I said I had looked at an old invitation with a January date.
So what happens to a pack rat who cannot throw away a newspaper, a piece of information or her now full-grown son’s toys? She distributes misinformation, that’s what. I came upon the REAL invitation to the Robbie Burns supper, right behind last year’s invitation asking you to contact Deborah Medders. So I apologize to all. Here’s the true story:
Oops! Time for new hearing aids. When I mentioned two lifelong West Chop couples in last week’s column who visited in the off-season, I heard the word “former” not “summer” friends. I apologize for causing any offense — these friends are still very much a part of our year-round lives.
A new star shines over Martha’s Vineyard! Jeremy and Mel Dunham welcomed new baby boy, Alexander Robert West Dunham, last Thursday, Jan. 3 at Brigham and Womens Hospital. Older brother Connor was treated to a week at Grandma Martha Dunham’s on Skiff avenue while his parents traveled off-Island for the birth. Everyone is home now and doing just great. Welcome to the world, Alexander!
Woody and Phyllis Williams are proud to announce that daughter Vanessa, now living in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., graduated from Pace University on Sept. 1 with a degree in law. Her significant other, Evan, has his mother Mary sitting as a supreme court judge in Westchester County.
Vanessa, Evan and Mary had a delightful three-day visit to the Island for Thanksgiving. The three joined Woody and Phyllis for a fine holiday meal at the Harbor View. Congratulations, Vanessa!
I have become accustomed to downward mobility, diminished dreams and disappointing occurrences. Therefore, my usual lengthy and optimistic New Year’s resolution list is shelved this year. My wants and needs are smaller. But this one hope for the new year is in your hands and you can make it happen for me. I want NO MORE FORWARDS. Yes, some are funny, many poignant, some informative, but way too many are, what was referred to in my Old Days, chain letters.
Welcome back to M.V. Tile Company! They have relocated to our town, where they started 17 years ago in a 300-square-foot space behind Rainy Day. Find them now at 123 Beach Road, Vineyard Haven, just next to Vineyard Scripts. This is a gallery-like shop. They say they are thrilled to be back. Days and hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Just in time to choose tiles for your holiday renovations.
I write from the Old Country where I just spent a very interesting Thanksgiving with Nonna, family, friends, my two dogs and cat. Her insurance time was up at rehab, so thank goodness Dr. John Campbell has returned to his chiropractic practice on-Island and brought charming young associate Sean Norkus. The two talented men were able to patch my back enough for me to drive down here.
