I hope you are all well-fed and rested from yesterday. This is my annual Black Friday wish list for holiday giving. Now, I know this has been a very bad economic year for us. If you can, consider sending a check or donating your time to the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard, Women Empowered, Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, the Boys and Girls Club or Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts of America.
A new star is shining over our Island. Whitney Fulp and Bruno Rodrigues have a baby boy, Lucas Rockefeller Rodrigues. You all know beautiful, tall, blond Whitney from her hard work at Stop & Shop and Cumberland Farms. Hopefully we’ll see her out and about soon with Lucas in tow.
“Train a child the way he should go and when he is old he shall not turn from it,” Proverbs 22:6.
When I was a kid my parents always took us with them to vote. I remember the mystique of the curtain and voting booth, somewhat reminiscent of the confessional but with a much better purpose — this time it was us who got to call the shots, not the priest.
You write “focused” and I write “focussed.” This has stymied me for years, but I never quite remember to get around to looking it up. Well, just now my computer underlined “focussed” as a misspell. Yet two of my favorite publications each spell it differently. I hunkered down in preparation for Sandy with lots of books, the Sunday New York Times and my newest New Yorker. Ah! There it was again.
Use your brakes! I had heard that a new stop sign was going up on the corner of Main and Woodlawn to give the seniors – and all of us – more time to cross from the Love House and Havenside over to the library, but I didn’t realize how soon. There was an officer with lights flashing, patiently informing all who passed that this was the new rule. The next day the town replaced the officer with a well-marked electronic sign announcing a new stop. Great idea.
What a great pleasure to finally try the Little House Cafe on State Road just past Surveyors Lane. I had no idea this adorable restaurant had already been opened for three years, year-round, before I had a chance to try it for lunch yesterday. Everything is prepared fresh, dinners are served from Wednesday through Saturday nights, and wine and beer are available. The menu is interesting and eclectic. Handicap access is wonderful. Nonna and I enjoyed it so. Our server was the lovely Paulina from my neighborhood. We’ll see you there.
Peter Simon is my hero! Nonna doesn’t get out for many excursions anymore, but last Sunday we planned a big day. It involves the walker, the wheelchair and the handicapped sticker for the truck. We began with the always entertaining Chicken Alley Art Show. Cheyenne, Monique, Nonna and I went and enjoyed meeting all our friends, as well as new acquaintances. Cheyenne was a great help with the footstool, wheelchair and walker conundrum.
