Penny Wong of Grace Church preschool announces the annual Turkey Run on Saturday, Nov. 23. The run starts at Bunch of Grapes on Main Street and continues to Owen Park where all participants will be greeted with water, oranges and medals.
She’s baaack!! Sorry to have missed you, gentle readers, but I have been caught up in a whirlwind of events. Thanks to the sharp eyes of my Island doctor, Ellen McMahon, I was sent immediately to our stellar partner hospital, Massachusetts General, to have some worrisome tests further checked out.
Leigh Smith and her daughter Pam Brock have just returned from a terrific weekend in Salisbury, Conn. They were there to attend the wedding of Leigh’s oldest grandson, Charlie, to his long intended, Cath.
Sorry to have missed you last week. I was under the weather, which sounds ridiculous because this weather has been too incredibly beautiful to be under. Some of you seasonals and vacationers who have come or stayed later than usual now know our secret: this is the very best time of year on storybook Island.
I have been meaning to compliment all the businesses and private homes in Vineyard Haven who have done a stupendous job this year with plantings and flowers. It seems like this is the best year ever. Special mention to Mike and Elaine Ciancio on Franklin street who have planted so many beautiful flowers. I think the grown kids and grandkids had something to do with this.
Last Monday night was one of our famous escargot party nights in my neighborhood. A few times each season Jim Hart kindly provides the snails and Bill and Jan Stokes lovingly cook them in butter with lots of garlic, serving them with warm bread. Floral arrangement was provided by Teri Praskach. The usual suspects — or should I say persons of interest — attended and brought cheese, crackers, salami, dips, potato chips, grapes and all kinds of sides to Bill and Jan’s deck. In attendance were Paul and Marge Howes, Jim and Trude Hart, who had wonderful tales to tell of their recent road trip, Laurie Marotta, Chris Paffendorf, Iole (Nonna) and this reporter.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Bruno’s, Bruno’s, Brunos! We waited with much fear and anticipation Labor Day to see if trash and recycles would be picked up. Oh, no one in my ‘hood is messy or generates much trash and recyclables, it was just all those pesky summer guests we have and the parties for the last hurrah of summer.
Welcome back to Jim and Trude Hart who spent a wonderful vacation touring our northern states. They had dreamed of seeing our country. I wonder where they’ll go next? So long to Kim Beal and her kids; they left last Monday. Kim was able to pack in clamming, celebrating both sons’ birthdays, beaching, and accompanying the boys Christian and Quinn and daughter Lilly on hikes.
May I be condemned to be in a stalled car in the middle of Five Corners on the Labor Day weekend exodus for neglecting to inform you last week of the famous Chicken Alley Art Show at our thrift shop last Sunday. This annual fundraiser for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is always a great place to meet friends, purchase gifts and view the art that comes into the shop over the previous year.
As I type right now I am missing the skillet throwing contest at the fair. Not to brag but you know this reporter, Holly Nadler and June Manning would easily tie for first place in this event. Bill and Jan Stokes’s daughter Kim Beal of West Hartford, Conn., has arrived at the family’s Island home.
