This is the kind of news I live to report. Over 50 years ago, Melvin and Neva Thornhill fell in love and stayed there. In celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary on June 4, Melvin and Neva are inviting all their Island friends to the First Baptist Church on Sunday, June 6, at 12:30 p.m. to witness the renewal of their vows. A wonderful reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Don’t miss this happy occasion. Neva says no gifts, please, but I bet a card would be okay.
Welcome to the world, Thomas Dommerich Dunn! Thomas was born on Monday, Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m. He weighed in at 6 pounds, 9.5 ounces, and is 19.5 inches long. Thomas is the son of longtime seasonal Islander Jessie Slocum and her husband Brett Dunn. Both — or I should now say all three — reside in Boston. His Island grandparents are Scott and Carol Slocum. Everyone is healthy, happy and beaming!
Today is an important anniversary in my life. It is exactly one year since I got third degree burns on my hand (cooking for the dogs) after which I took a vow never to cook again. I am pleased to say, unlike my New Year’s resolutions, I have kept this vow. I could not have done it without the help of all my neighbors and friends who are so kind to feed and entertain me. You know who you are. In fact, the year has worked out so well, I am renewing my vow.
Friday, August 6, was certainly a day that has lived in infamy. Our annual memorial of the Hiroshima bombing will be held at the Aquinnah Lighthouse at 6 a.m. Please join us for prayers, words, songs and silence. You may catch a ride from Cronig’s in Vineyard Haven at 5:15 a.m., or be collected at Alley’s at 5:30 a.m. sharp. I’ll see you there.
Isn’t the new road paving on Franklin street wonderful? I believe it even took care of what I called “the reverse speed bump” down at the corner of Centre street. Now, don’t let this make you think you can speed on my road!

First, the bad news: I incorrectly reported last week that Herb Ward’s talk at the Federated Church Parish House about his great-grandfather, Capt. Levi Jackson of the Mertie B. Crowley, was to be last Sunday night. The good news is the talk is actually tonight, at 7 p.m, and all are welcome. A $10 dollar donation is suggested. Herb will explain how 14 people were saved off Wasque in 1910. More nautical stories! I’ll see you there.
A sure sign of spring — last week I found the first tick in my hair! The dogs, cat and I are still getting settled in from our long sojourn in White Plains. So nice to see my Island friends again. As good luck would have it, I was called to sub on teacher appreciation day; I can’t tell you the wonderful food and beautiful flowers so many parents dropped off in the faculty room. Thanks to all!
