Chappaquiddick (Edgartown)
Derived from a Native American word meaning “separated island,” Chappy, as it is called, is located off the eastern end of Edgartown and accessed by a three-car ferry. There are about 100 year-round residents and many more seasonal homeowners. With more than 800 acres of public beach and conservation land, it draws saltwater fishermen, kayakers, and bird watchers. There is no commercial zoning.

Lawsuits and legal appeals continue to stack up in the battle over oversand vehicle trails on Chappaquiddick.
The Martha’s Vineyard Refuse District household hazmat collection is scheduled for Saturday July 20.
The nonprofit, which oversees miles of oversand vehicle trails on Chappaquiddick, is proposing to retire about 1,300 feet of trail along the bayside of Cape Pogue because it now regularly becomes inundated by Cape Pogue Bay.
