A mechanical issue sidelined a Steamship Authority ferry on the Martha’s Vineyard route Thursday, prompting the boat line to divert all trips to the Island to the VIneyard Haven terminal.

Steamship Authority staff were investigating a coolant issue on the M/V Nantucket, temporarily taking the ferry out of service. All trips that were scheduled to come into Oak Bluffs were moved to VIneyard have to help manage traffic and accommodate customers, the boat line said in a statement Thursday morning.

“Any customers with reservations on affected trips should report to the Vineyard Haven Terminal at the corner of Union and Water streets to be placed in priority standby for travel,” the Steamship Authority told customers.

With the diversions, Tisbury police suggested people avoid Five Corners if they could.

“Not that 5 Corners is a destination for anyone in the summer anyway, but if you can take the longer route today, probably would be best,” the department wrote in a Facebook post Thursday morning.
