William Waterway Tribute

On Monday, Dec. 21, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. there will be a memorial service to honor William Waterway and his stewardship of lighthouses and water. Mr. Waterway had made the Vineyard his home since the 1970s, championing many causes and embracing all manner of the arts. He was a writer, poet, musician, filmmaker, the list is very long. He died this fall at the age of 66.

The service takes place at the Gay Head Light.

Songs for Uganda

Rosewater Market and Take Away is offering more than food on Friday evening, Dec. 18, although tasty bites will be in abundance too. From 5 to 8 p.m. the market will be filled with song as Willy Mason, Jemima James, Elissa Turnbull, Isaac Taylor and friends perform a concert to benefit sustainable development and women’s empowerment projects in Uganda.

Dinner, holiday treats and coffee bar refreshments will be available, as well as good cheer and goodwill toward all.

Geraldine Brooks will give a book signing at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. Her latest book is The Secret Chord, published earlier this fall. The novel follows the story of King David, as viewed by the prophet Natan, on his journey from obscurity to king and then his fall.

Concert and Pageant in West Tisbury

On Sunday, Dec. 20, the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury will hold its annual holiday concert. This year, the rarely heard Christmas Story by the 17th century German composer, Heinrich Schütz, will be performed. But wait, there’s more.

The church choir will be joined by the newly-formed Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Orchestra with trumpets, trombones, woodwind and strings to help make spirits soar.
