Chilmark‘s summer buzz is over. Now the roads, beaches and shops are quiet and welcoming to the visitors who enjoy this time of year. The community center has closed, the Home Port will close this Sunday and the mail will no longer be delivered to the Menemsha Post Office. All signs of the approaching fall season. However, there are still many activities to keep us busy. Please make note of all the dates below.

Greetings from Chilmark where the January thaw is much appreciated. The mild weather has stimulated lots of activity in the bird world. I hope the birders had a successful count last week. The resident flock of crows in Menemsha recently spent the day cleaning out our house gutters . . . we think they spotted something green growing there.

The news is that Chilmark feels the heat. This week wasn’t June in January, it was more like August in June. Our weather was very hot and humid for several days . . . not much like our usual June but very much like those few days in August when we always assure our visitors that “this is very unusual for us.”

Chilmark is enduring March with some ease as every gray day is followed by a couple of stunning sunny days . . . all promising a green and leafy April, we hope. We know the farmers and gardeners welcome these rainy days, so we try to see the silver lining.

Sunday is Easter and the Chilmark Community Church will host the annual Easter egg search for children at the church at 10:30 a.m., followed by the worship service at 11 a.m.

The Chilmark weather continues to be fit for all sorts of summer activities so the beaches, the harbor and the roadsides are scenes of activity still. Fair week is here and we wish good luck to all who have made entries at the Agricultural Fair.

Chilmark is enjoying these few days of summer which aren’t as rushed as the days will be after schools are closed throughout the land. We have a few days to get all the chores done, grass mowed and gardens planted before the crowds come to visit. We will be ready — unless we sneak off to chase those bass that already are lurking in our waters.

Many of our seasonal friends and neighbors are finding their way to Chilmark in spite of the many complexities of travel these days.

Chilmark is alive and well this week after experiencing all kinds of weather that included heavy rains, loud thunder and bright lighting ... followed by sunny days and clear skies! Our visitors were out and about and appeared to take it all in stride. The pressure of so many things to do seems to keep us all moving through these summer days, rain or shine.

Fishing is still good in our up-Island waters and many tables have been featuring bluefish in many culinary variations.

It seems that March has come in like a lamb, so beware the end of the month. The warm days are inspiring and making some of us itchy to get outside and start digging and raking.

The special town meeting this past Monday night was well attended and after some thoughtful questions were asked and answered, the citizens approved the three warrant items freeing monies for the purchase of land to improve the affordable home sites.
