Chilmark enjoyed another week of Indian summer with mild temperatures and sunshine. The crisper November days must be just ahead. The woods are still yellow and leafy and a pleasure to drive by.

Chilmark is enjoying a few more warm days of sunshine. All the outdoor chores are getting done as we try to prepare ourselves for the cold weather headed our way.

The annual firefighters’ Halloween party for children took place at the Community Center on Saturday evening and there seemed to be almost as many adults in costume as there were children! It was a joyful party and enjoyed by all. Many thanks go to Katie Carroll who put it all together so successfully this year.

The fall foliage hit full force this week and I hope you down-Islanders had a chance to take your annual drive up-Island to see the pretty leaves because tonight’s heavy downpour will change things soon! The roadsides were colorful for several days. It’s Mother Nature’s treat to us before giving us the bleak winter scenery.

The Menemsha Café is still open for breakfast and lunch and for dinner on the weekends.

The wind, she blew! That’s the best way I can describe our northeaster on Sunday. Lots of branches and leaves landed in all the yards around town. Fortunately, we didn’t lose our electricity. Funny, but that was the first thing everyone said when asked how he or she fared in the storm!

We have enjoyed several summer-like days following the storm, bringing everyone out to catch a few more warm hours in the sun.

If you missed everybody this week, they were all in Vineyard Haven trying to get on a boat headed off-Island. Everyone involved, including the Steamship Authority staff, said it was the heaviest October weekend travel crush they could remember! Needless to say, we came back to Chilmark’s peace and quiet and were glad to be here.

Chilmark, on Monday, is enjoying the usual lovely day that follows a mean Northeaster ... I am writing to you early this week so that you will have the paper on Thursday. There isn’t a chance of my telling you much that is new as I am pretty much snowbound from the Sunday storm. We are being dug and plowed out as I write and I can only hope to hit the ground running and learn some exciting news for the rest of this column.

The Columbus Day weekend is sort of the last hurrah of summer. There are already lots of people here at their seasonal homes and fishermen still cover the beaches, in hopes of a winning fish. The weather is changing but still pleasant for outdoor activities.

Chilmark is in the midst of the busy times — end of the year budgets under construction and destruction at the town hall, and the holiday buzz in many households. There is always something to demand our attention ... and something good to eat everywhere we go!

Quiet times are here. A few fishermen are still with us, and there are some travellers passing through, but the volume of traffic has clearly dropped off up-Island.

Heather Neill and Pat Lackey of Manchester, Pa., are enjoying a late fall vacation in town. Heather is a popular artist whose paintings are often seen at local galleries.
