Chilmark is slowing down just a bit and the speed and intensity of most activities has slowed just a bit. There is still plenty going on and not many parking places available. The sunsets are just as lovely and the water is warm for swimming so we are far from done with summer, just catching our breath.
Chilmark heads into the last days of August. They are often believed to be the hardest days of summer to survive. I will go on record and tell you that Chilmark is still in vacation mode with smiles more in abundance than otherwise. I visited both Chilmark Store and Menemsha Market and found folks still upbeat and cheerful.
Chilmark in August . . . even the President and his family know that this is the best place to be in August! Welcome to them and to all who look forward to spending time in August here. Let’s all relax and enjoy the many moods of a summer resort.
Chilmark movie maker Thomas Bena, who is the executive and creative director of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, will be screening his movie, One Big Home, on Friday, July 29 at the Chilmark Community Center at 8 p.m.

Chilmark welcomes home recently-elected selectman Jim Malkin and his wife, Joan, who are back at their South Road home and their assorted town commitments after an enjoyable month’s vacation in Italy.
Chilmark is in full summer mode. Be prepared...there are no quick stops or peaceful moments at any public places...or parking spots either. However, we hear more laughter than usual and there is a general feel-good mood surrounding us. Embrace it, beats growling against the tide!
Chilmark’s waterfront is getting lots of attention this summer. This week we all enjoyed the sight of the Polynesian sailing vessel Hokule’a. She made an unscheduled overnight stop in Menemsha and was a lovely surprise sight for many who saw her.
