The warm weather has returned again this week and has brought families to their summer residences for brief stays to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Anne Vanderhoop Madison and her family are getting busy preparing to open the Aquinnah Shop; Berta Welch and her sister, Carla Cuch, have opened Stony Creek Gifts for the season; Marshall Lee and Martha Vanderhoop are opening their HatMarChar Shop soon. There are many visitors each day to the cliffs.

Community Baptist Church of Gay Head invites one and all to attend services during the holy week of Easter. Good Friday services will be conducted this evening at 7 p.m. with worship by the Rev. Ellen Tatreau. Easter Morning Sunrise service will be held at 6 a.m. on Sunday with the Reverend Tatreau.

With the death of Gladys Anna Widdiss on June 13 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, our Aquinnah community has lost one of its national treasures. She was surrounded by her family. Gladys was a crusader in our Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, representing our tribe across the nation for the past 70 years on her own time and at her own expense.

With the opening of the Howwossee Trading Post this past week, all the shops at the Cliffs are now open for the season.

Thank you to Aquinnah highway superintendent Jay Smalley, who has made sure our cemetery, highways and byways look presentable for the season. The trees are in full bloom, there is an owl out at night along Lobsterville Road and the beach is calling sun worshipers already for the season. The Outermost Inn opened over the weekend.

The torrential rains of Monday night and Tuesday have certainly created more blooms and blossoms around Aquinnah. There are many beautiful birds to be found as well, as evidenced by a recent sighting of a very handsome woodpecker and beautiful chickadee. Of course the squirrels are in abundance in and around the bird feeders. Dreamcatcher opened this week and the Howwosswee Trading Post will be open by the end of the month.

The April showers obviously held off until the month of May. Everything is awakening with the abundance of blossoms. Lilacs are three weeks ahead of schedule, the shad and beach plums are now in bloom. The Aquinnah Shop has officially opened for breakfast and lunch.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will hold its annual spring social on Sunday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Potluck luncheon will be served; please bring a dish to share. There will be dancing, drumming and an afternoon of fun for the family to enjoy. The entire Vineyard community is invited to attend on the grounds of the tribal building on Black Brook Road.
